The National Hurricane Center says Hurricane Florence - with winds of up to 140 miles per hour - is expected to be "extremely dangerous" when it hits the East Coast early Friday.

"These violent storms form over the ocean, often beginning as a tropical wave - a low pressure area that moves through the moisture-rich tropics, possibly enhancing shower and thunderstorm activity", the agency explains.

Simpson said the coverage and attention on Florence is a reminder for New Englanders of the importance of being vigilant during hurricane season and preparing for severe weather "way before any potential event".

The National Hurricane Center has issued a storm surge watch, extending from Edisto Beach, South Carolina up through the North Carolina-Virginia border.

As Hurricane Florence churned toward an eventual Eastern Seaboard landfall, more than 1 million people were ordered to evacuate their homes along the USA south-east coast on Tuesday.

The hurricane is set to inundate low-lying islands off the coast of North Carolina, like the Outer Banks and other barrier islands, according to the NHC's "cone of probability" forecast.

The governor stressed Hurricane Florence is still "dangerous and unpredictable", with a force that could rival Hugo in size and strength. She said her house, built in 2009 in Buxton, North Carolina, is on a ridge and built to withstand a hurricane. First, the ocean surge along our coast.

The category 4 hurricane is expected to make landfall in the US late Thursday night, bringing heavy winds and up to 30 inches of rain. Helene is expected to veer north well before coming close to the coast, though Isaac is expected to turn into a hurricane as it continues heading west towards the Windward Islands, the Miami Herald wrote. Another aspect of the forecast to notice is the highest intensity of the storm is predicted to occur before landfall and then there is likely to be some minor weakening prior to the eye crossing the land.
