Barack Obama returns to campaign trail, but will he succeed?

Students waiting

Former President Barack Obama says the USA needs to restore "honesty and decency" in government.

Former President Barack Obama urged Americans to vote this November in a speech on the "state of our democracy" at the University of IL at Urbana-Champaign campus Friday that will set his tone ahead of the midterm elections.

Former US president Barack Obama returned to politics with a scathing and unusually direct rebuke of his successor Donald Trump.

Addressing at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, less than two months before the mid-term elections that could determine the course of Trump's presidency, he said that the democracy in the United States was facing the biggest threat of "indifference" and "cynicism".

"Appealing to tribe, appealing to fear, pitting one group against another, telling people that order and security will be restored if it weren't for those who don't look like us or don't sound like us or don't pray like we do.that's an old playbook", Obama said. "That is not how our democracy is supposed to work".

Obama even brought up Trump's refusal to stand up to white supremacists who marched in Charlottesville, Virginia, in August 2017.

Obama continued, "And you happen to be coming of age during one of those moments".

Obama emphasized to the students the "stakes really are higher" regarding this year's midterms.

He added, "This is not normal".

US willing to talk with China: White House adviser
China plans to tax an additional $60 billion in U.S. products if the Trump administration expands its hit list by $200 billion. He pointed out that 23 per cent of the impending tariffs on US$200 billion of Chinese imports targeted consumer products.

Trump fired back, saying he went to sleep watching the speech. Accounts said Trump's aides don't trust him and were trying to curb some of his inclinations - including stealing papers off his desk. "I found he's very good.for sleeping".

When Obama stood in front of the IL crowd on Friday and went after Trump by name, then called on young people to vote in November to "restore some semblance of sanity to our politics", Republicans felt like he was talking to their base too.

The former Democratic President hit Trump and Republicans hard on a variety of issues including health care, voting rights, campaign finance laws, and the economy, arguing that some policies GOP leaders are pursuing today aren't conservative. Next week, he'll return to the campaign trail in OH to campaign for Richard Cordray and other Democrats.

His campaign activity will continue until October and it will also include fundraising appearances too.

Trump, at a rally later in the day, said he had been asked what he thought of Obama's speech.

The speech was a preview of the argument that Mr. Obama is likely to make throughout the fall.

"Democrats need all hands on deck to take back the House, and we could not be more honored to have President Barack Obama's inspirational voice and unifying message on the campaign trail, with his first stop in Southern California", Rep. "I don't mean to pretend I am channelling Abraham Lincoln now, but that's not what he had in mind, I think, when he helped form the Republican Party". Obama was "a lot lower key than yesterday's speech".

"It is always tempting for politicians, for their own gain, and for people in power, to try to see if they can divide people, scapegoat folks, turn them on each other because when that happens, you get gridlock and government doesn't work and people get cynical and they decide not to participate", he said.
