US willing to talk with China: White House adviser

Shipping containers stand March 23 in a terminal at the Yangshan Deep Water Port in Shanghai. New data show the U.S. goods deficit with China in the seven months through July this year widened about 8 percent to $234 billion from the same period in 2017

China has said that it is ready to retaliate with "necessary countermeasures" if President Donald Trump goes ahead with the tariff hike.

The deadline for public comment on the next wave of punitive taxes on $200 billion of annual imports from China expired Thursday, so Trump could impose the tariffs immediately.

Trump told reporters on Friday that the tariffs would "take place very soon".

Trump continued, saying that "behind that there is another $267 billion [list] ready to go on short notice if I want". "That totally changes the equation".

He pointed out that 23 per cent of the impending tariffs on US$200 billion of Chinese imports targeted consumer products. China plans to tax an additional $60 billion in U.S. products if the Trump administration expands its hit list by $200 billion. The U.S. Trade Representative's office received almost 6,000 comments during the public comment period on the proposed levies, which ended Thursday night. The goods trade deficit with China surged to a record high in July.

The Mac mini desktop computer, Apple Pencil stylus accessory for iPads, various chargers and adaptors and tooling equipment used to manufacturer and design some products in the US will also be affected, the Cupertino, California-based company told the Office of US Trade Representative in a letter dated September 5.

Notably, the iPhone was not cited as part of Apple's potentially impacted devices, possibly because of an exemption the Trump administration promised to negotiate on behalf of Apple earlier this year.

President Donald Trump took to Twitter today to call out one of the biggest tech companies in the world, Apple, the Washington Examiner reports.

"Moreover, because China accounts for such a large percentage of imports for consumption or further manufacturing, any additional tariffs would likely translate into added costs and price increases in the United States". And he said he'll likely sign up updated free trade agreement with South Korea later this month when he visits the United Nations. Apple said "it is hard to see" how tariffs would advance the government's goal. But David French, top lobbyist for the National Retail Federation, whose members include Amazon.com, BJ's Wholesale Club and Macy's, said almost every consumer good could be affected if Trump follows through on all threatened tariffs.

The Commerce Department said on Wednesday the trade gap jumped 9.5 percent to $50.1 billion, increasing for a second straight month, suggesting that trade could be a drag on economic growth in the third quarter.

In its letter, Apple argued that the way USA trade officials calculate the U.S. trade balance - attributing the entire value of a product to a country like China where final assembly happens - fails to reflect the true value that Apple generates in the United States. This also provides another reminder to investors that it is not just the United States and China that stand at the heart of the global trade tensions.

Kudlow, who heads the National Economic Council, told CNBC the administration was still talking with China about trade issues but so far China had not met USA requests.
