GoFundMe says homeless veteran will receive money owed to him

It seemed like a feel-good story: A homeless man bought a stranded woman a tank of gas with his last $20, and in return she set up a GoFundMe campaign to help him get back on his feet that ultimately raised a whopping $400,000.

WPVI reports investigators searched a BMW in the driveway of the New Jersey home of Kate McClure and Mark D'Amico.

Citing "enormous public interest" in the case, county prosecutor Scott Coffina confirmed in a Facebook post that Mr D'Amico and Ms McClure are under investigation, though no charges have been filed.

A judge presiding over Bobbitt's lawsuit ordered the couple to give sworn statements Monday on the status of all the money raised, as well as to turn over documents. The couple has denied wrongdoing and said they were afraid that Bobbitt would spend the money on drugs.

The allegations were used as a basis for obtaining the search warrant, which generally requires a lesser standard of proof than an arrest warrant. He added that no charges were filed but "further updates will be provided as circumstances warrant".

This photo taken August 15, 2018, shows Johnny Bobbitt Jr., the homeless veteran who gave $20 for gas for Kate McClure, back on the streets with his brother.

He claims he only received $75,000.

D'Amico said in a second text said that he and McClure were forced to "bad mouth" Bobbitt in their defense, which he said he didn't want either. The judge also ordered the couple to appear in court, saying that she had heard enough from their attorney, according to CNN. Authorities are also taking a closer look at the couple that started a GoFundMe to benefit Johnny Bobbitt, trying to determine where the funds ultimately went. TV news footage showed D'Amico swinging a golf club on the lawn as officers carried boxes of evidence out of his house.

Common painkiller linked to major heart problems
The authors point out that, although the relative risk was increased, the absolute risk remained low for the individual patient. Researchers found that the increased risks applied to men and women of all ages and also those taking low doses of diclofenac .

The couple told The Philadelphia Inquirer they gave Bobbitt some of the money but were withholding the rest until he got a job and was drug-free.

"This is an extremely rare situation and we are working with law enforcement officials to get Johnny the money raised on his behalf, which means the 30-day policy does not apply in this case", Whitehorne said in a statement issued earlier Thursday. D'Amico told Bobbitt that he could get the money without it being put in a trust or without any stipulations on how it should be spent.

After starting the fundraising campaign previous year, Ms McClure said she did not have enough money to pay Mr Bobbitt back for $20 worth of fuel he bought her, but she returned to the spot where he begged in the days afterwards, giving him cash, clothing and food.

There are conflicting reports from the couple and Bobbitt about how the money was used and whether Bobbitt was a participant or a victim. "GoFundMe's goal has always been to ensure Johnny gets [the] support he deserves", Bobby Whithorne, GoFundMe director of North America communications, said in a statement.

"Down-and-out Marine veteran Johnny Bobbitt, Jr. was scraping the bottom of a bottle of barbecue sauce for sustenance at one point, said Philadelphia lawyer Jacqueline Promislo".

Badway previously said in court that Bobbitt received at least $200,000 of the funds, The Inquirer reported.

GoFundMe has reportedly given $20,000 to a bank account created by Bobbitt's legal team to provide assistance during this investigation.
