Woods off to hot start at BMW Championship

Tiger Woods off to insane start with season on the line

Woods came out firing at Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, with an opening nine 29, the second-lowest score through nine holes of his entire career.

Schauffele almost holed a wedge on his second hole, rolled in a 40-foot birdie putt in the middle of his round Friday and wound up with a 6-under-par 64 in the BMW Championship for the lowest 36-hole score of his career and a two-shot lead over Justin Rose.

Woods, who along with Bryson Dechambeau and Phil Mickelson was named as a Ryder Cup captain's pick on Tuesday, remains in good position to achieve that goal but will have to play catch-up in his quest for his 80th PGA Tour win and first since 2013.

Woods also had a disappointing second day and slipped five shots off the lead to tied 12th after a level-par 70.

"It's been something I've been struggling with all year and it's been much better the last couple of weeks", he said.

On 11 under, the 38-year-old is in outright second, two behind American Xander Schauffele, who would give himself a huge shout of earning the final US Ryder Cup wild card with victory at Aronimink.

Though he has not won since 2013, Woods missed most of four seasons with a chronic back injury before surgery past year alleviated the problem.

Tropical Storm Gordon makes landfall on US Gulf Coast, one death reported
Neighbour Amanda Ray told the Pensacola News Journal that she heard a crack and a scream as the limb fell around 9 p.m. It could bring potentially life-threatening storm surge across parts of coastal Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.

The Greystones man birdied three of his last four holes but finished two shots outside the cut line on one-over par.

"I have given myself some good chances and here's another one". He took 33 putts for the round. Just nothing went in.

Woods and McIlroy still had to hit the shots and make the putts.

"That's the way it goes. It turned into even par which is not what I needed to do". "Everyone is going low and birdies should be had".

Schauffele's closest threat, the ever-consistent Rose, had a seven-birdie 63.

The BMW Championship is the third event of the $US67 million FedEx Cup playoffs.

Schauffele, ranked 41st, needs a strong weekend to advance to the season-ender.
