US Open: Novak Djokovic defeats John Millman

Novak Djokovic Marin Cilic Kei Nishikori Madison Keys are quarterfinal headliners

He got the break but trading breaks when you are one down didn't add up and Nishikori won his third straight US Open quarterfinal, and 9th meeting with Cilic in 15 tries. But then he faltered and they went to a tiebreaker, where Cilic led 4-3 before delivering two double-faults in a row.

Federer, a 20-time Grand Slam champion, was ousted on Monday by John Millman, an unseeded player from Australia.

"It's great to see, " said Nishikori, who is into his third major semifinal - all in NY - but is still in search of his first Grand Slam trophy.

Osaka had it much easier, continuing what's been a largely dominant run through the draw by winning in just 57 minutes, the third time in her five matches she didn't even have to play an hour.

Keys, a 23-year-old American who is seeded No. 14, overwhelmed Suarez Navarro with her powerful serve and groundstrokes, building a 22-10 edge in winners.

After Naomi Osaka reached the women's semi-finals earlier, Nishikori's win means there is a Japanese man and woman in the last four of a Grand Slam for the first time in the Open Era.

"It could be another big battle just as at Wimbledon", said Del Potro.

Less than 24 hours on from Rafael Nadal's unforgettable victory over Dominic Thiem, Arthur Ashe Stadium played host to a gruelling five-setter between the two players who contested the 2014 men's final.

At the start of the match, Cilic has beaten Nishikori.

Serena, Stephens reach US Open quarterfinals
A couple of loose points gifted Kanepi a break in the first game of the second set, however, and she couldn't get back on terms. Next comes a quarterfinal against 2016 runner-up Karolina Pliskova , who beat Williams in the US Open semifinals that year.

McEnroe and co-commentators Chris Fowler and Brad Gilbert continued to toe the line between respect and praise throughout the first set. "Novak's a champion. He's played a lot of Grand Slams and he knows how to win them".

And as against Federer, that was enough to lose the first set after Djokovic benefited from a lucky net chord and then fought off a break point in the final game to serve the set out.

Nishikori, who missed last year's US Open after a season-ending wrist injury, joined compatriot Naomi Osaka in reaching the semis - the first time that a Japanese man and woman have reached the last four in the same Grand Slam.

That seemed incredibly harsh on the two-time grand slam champion and former world number one, who won here in 2001, beating the great Pete Sampras in the final. Then after that I felt like third and fourth I played very well.

"I was really tested", Djokovic said on court after the match.

"I forgot about it [beating Djokovic]", said Nishikori. Just put me back a bit on my back foot. Federer had the advantage in the shortest and mid-range points while Djokovic erased that deficit with the better performance in the longer rallies, saving many of those break points after drawing Roger into more extended exchanges where he had the upper hand. He was able to come through on only four of his 20 break points.

But Nishikori broke Cilic in the final game, capturing the match with a blistering service return.

"I think the guy's beat a brick wall once", Millman said, "because he makes you work hard for every point and it's relentless". Novak won just two points more than Roger and he had to dig deep in his service games to emerge as a victor before the deciding set, saving 19 out of 23 break points and stealing Federer's serve six times from 13 opportunities.
