US Open: Naomi Osaka beats Serena Williams in controversial women's singles final

Serena Williams and Anastasija Sevastova shake hands at the end of their semi-final

The No. 20 seed defeated last year's beaten finalist Madison Keys 6-2, 6-4 in the second of Thursday's semi-finals in Arthur Ashe Stadium to set up a clash with Serena Williams in Saturday's final. Osaka, a 20-year-old based in Florida who was in the last four of a major for the first time, will face 23-time Grand Slam victor Serena Williams in the championship match on Saturday. Serena doesn't utilize it, choosing instead to work out her issues on her own.

"I know how to volley, I usually come in just to shake hands", said Williams.

If Naomi Osaka is to lose tonight against Serena Williams, she'll only have herself to blame.

Williams was not only strong on her serve as the match wore on but dominating at the net as well.

The 20-year-old, who grew up in NY and Florida, has Flushing Meadows buzzing about her lethal skills and disarming charm.

Williams called her return to the US Open final for a ninth time "incredible" given that she was undergoing surgery for life threatening blood clots this time previous year in the wake of giving birth. "Because I'm a woman, you're going to take this away from me?" she yelled at tournament officials.

Williams pulled it together and jumped to a 3-1 lead in the second set, seeming to have found her footing. Osaka has held serve 73.2% of the time on hard court in the last 12 months, and broken opponents 38.9% (111.1% combined) and these stats are very strong, albeit not quite towards elite level.

For Osaka, the match against the veteran Williams is a dream come true.

Khalil Mack Trade: Matt Nagy preaches persistence over resistance
The Raiders were positive that Mack would want to surpass those bank-breaking numbers, so they were forced to listen to offers. Bottom line is, we did do our due diligence, there was a standoff and he got a great contract from the Bears".

"I love you, Serena", she added before adding "I love you, mom; I love everybody".

Frustration had set in, though, and after a mistake Williams slammed her racquet down after a mistake and broke it.

The 36-year-old, who was targeting a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam singles title at Flushing Meadows, angrily confronted umpire Ramos after being told off for what he deemed a coaching intervention.

Osaka also has a strong attachment to Japanese culture, describing her visits to the country as like a "super-awesome extended vacation that I don't want to leave", according to media reports. She's even played at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center grounds before.

"I thought I could get a break but every time she would hit an ace or a big shot", said the 23-year-old.

Brooke Marine of W Magazine wrote of the Osaka sisters, "Now, the Osaka sisters follow in the footsteps of Venus and Serena Williams, as two young sisters who are making waves in the field of professional tennis, and crushing their competition both on the court and on social media".

She made the break stand up, withstanding six break points in the next game.
