Nishikori, Osaka give Japan historic tennis day at US Open

US Open 2018: Kei Nishikori beats Marin Cilic in five sets to reach semi-finals

The speedy win over Tsurenko was the third time Osaka has wrapped up victory in under an hour in NY and should allow her to be fresh for Thursday's semi-final.

Later Wednesday, Osaka was joined in the record books by compatriot Kei Nishikori who reached his third semi-final at the US Open.

But a few hours later, Nishikori helped Osaka create an even more incredible slice of history.

The Ukrainian had a small window to grab momentum but failed to cash in on her three break-point opportunities while trailing 4-1 in the second set and Osaka fought back before cruising through the final game.

And it is also the first time a Japanese man and woman have made the semi-finals of the same Grand Slam after Naomi Osaka won her quarter-final earlier today.

The No. 21 ranked Nishikori defeated No. 7 ranked Cilic in five sets, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6, 4-6, 6-4. Nishikori said this week that he was nervous once that match began, but this one was nothing like that day.

The match was a repeat of the 2014 US Open final, which Cilic won, and the Croatian made a strong start as he took the opening set.

Japan's Kei Nishikori advances to the semifinals of the US Open.

"Just like my entire body was shaking, so I'm really glad I was able to play well today", she said.

"I think it's because of Kei", she said, holding her hands apart to show how much bigger Nishikori is in Japan, from where her family moved to NY when she was 3.

"Well, it definitely means a lot for me, and I always thought if I were to win a Grand Slam, the first one I'd want to win is the US Open, because I have grown up here and, like, then my grandparents can come and watch", she said.

"I really don't think it's that hot, sorry".

To get to Saturday's championship match, 20th seed Osaka will have to get past U.S. 14th seed Madison Keys who breezed past Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro 6-4, 6-3.

It was just the latest in what's been a dominant run for Osaka.

On Osaka's first match point, she hammered a return at her opponent's feet, and Tsurenko could do little more than send her response into the bottom of the net. "I was not feeling well", she said.

On Wednesday, Osaka only needed 12 winners because a whopping 31 of her other points came via unforced errors by Tsurenko.

Against Tsurenko, Osaka barely broke a sweat, winning, 6-1, 6-1.

Suarez Navarro has now lost all seven Grand Slam quarter-finals she has contested.

Suarez Navarro upset former champion Maria Sharapova in the last round and needs another win to become the first Spanish women to reach the U.S. Open semi-finals since Conchita Martinez in 1996.
