DOJ: We will examine social media firms that "may be hurting competition"

Twitter isn't biased and Facebook's getting better at fighting trolls, tech execs to tell lawmakers today

The social media executives underwent questioning before the Senate Intelligence Committee Wednesday.

However, like Walden, Pallone acknowledged that Twitters ability to spread information quickly has a dark side, and said it and other social media companies must do more to regain and maintain public trust. Dorsey said that the social media platform was meant to be a "public square", but failed to deal with "abuse, harassment, troll armies, propaganda through bots, misinformation campaigns, and divisive filter bubbles".

Twitter Inc. shares fell as much as 6.6% as Chief Executive Officer Jack Dorsey testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee in Washington, though it's unclear why the stock is down so much. While all three tech companies have been accused of political bias against conservatives, the more public-facing nature of Twitter has made it an especially easy target.

Facebook came under fire for being at the forefront of Russia's interference in the 2016 election. Democrat Frank Pallone of New Jersey accused President Trump and Republicans of peddling "conspiracy theories about Twitter and other social media platforms to whip up their base and fund-raise".

"When bad actors try to use our site, we will block them", she said.

Neither Twitter, nor Facebook, immediately responded to Ars' request for comment.

Another, more complex, issue may arise when Mr Dorsey testifies later in the afternoon in front of the House Energy.

Barcelona scores eight vs. Huesca, including a jaw-dropping Lionel Messi goal
Messi's two goals were both superb finishes, and he also set up Ivan Rakitic for Barcelona's fifth goal with a lovely dink. Messi registered another assist in the 81st minute, sending Alba a crafty through ball toward the far post.

There might also be overall uncertainty about the future of Twitter, now that Dorsey has publicly said the company is fundamentally rethinking core parts of the business.

He spoke with Dorsey about being an "equal opportunity shadow-banner" that isn't exclusively targeting Republicans and asked, "Twitter undertook no behavior to selectively censor conservative Republicans or conservative voices on your platform, is that correct?"

Google was invited to attend the Senate hearing but declined to send its chief executive Sundar Pichai or Larry Page, the head of its parent firm Alphabet. All together, 74 percent of Facebook users say they have taken at least one of these three actions in the past year.

"Unfortunately, what I described as a 'national security vulnerability, ' and 'unacceptable risk, ' back in November remains unaddressed", Senator Richard Burr, the committee's Republican chairman, said. The company's Chief Legal Officer Kent Walker sent a written statement, promising to maintain efforts to thwart foreign interference in USA elections.

Google too was to be present at this hearing, but the company did not send a senior executive.

Dorsey, in prepared testimony for the House hearing, said "Twitter does not use political ideology to make any decisions, whether related to ranking content on our service or how we enforce our rules".
