Nike teams with Colin Kaepernick in ad campaign National Football League will hate

Kaepernick the face of Nike's 30th anniversary 'Just Do It' campaign

Gino Fisanotti, Nike's vice-president of brand for North America, told ESPN: "He has leveraged the power of sport to help move the world forward".

According to ESPN, Nike had been paying Kaepernick since the company sponsored him in 2011, but waited for the right moment to include him in ads.

Kaepernick on Monday posted a photo to his Instagram and Twitter accounts featuring a black-and-white close-up of his face overlaid with an inspirational message: "Believe in Something". Nike is the official provider of the NFL's jerseys. He's now best known for kneeling during the national anthem to protest police brutality and racial inequality when he first took a knee in 2016.

Reactions to the ad began to pour in Monday afternoon from other National Football League players and figures like Jemele Hill, who found herself at the center of a similar frenzy thanks to Trump's infantile behavior.

Kaepernick has not played in the National Football League since the end of the 2016 season.

The New York Times reported on August 30 that an arbitrator appointed by the NFL Players Association ruled Kaepernick and his legal team had unearthed enough evidence for the case to proceed to a full court hearing.

UEFA Champions League group stage draw comes up with interesting match-ups
The draw was also kind on German champions Bayern Munich, although they will meet two great European names in Benfica and Ajax. Group D is possibly the most open, featuring former European champions Porto, Lokomotiv Moscow, Schalke 04 and Galatasaray.

President Donald Trump has called players who "disrespect" the United States flag "sons of bitches" and called for them to be sacked.

Though not as controversial, the ad was in response to a kerfuffle over the French Open's decision to bar Williams from bringing back her popular "catsuit" outfit to the 2019 tournament.

Kaepernick was the first in a series of National Football League (NFL) stars to kneel during the U.S. national anthem before matches.

The protests continue into the 2018 season, with some players raising their fists in the air while the anthem plays. An arbitrator ruled last week that Kaepernick's case will go to trial.

Nike did not immediately respond to TIME's request for comment about the new campaign.
