Rescuers deal with fire in Italian bridge rubble before day of mourning

Milan vs. Genoa Sampdoria vs. Fiorentina postponed following tragic bridge collapse

Italian politicians, priests and dignitaries gathered yesterday at a solemn state funeral for victims of the bridge collapse in Genoa, as the death toll rose to 42 after the discovery of a family of three in a auto crushed under the rubble.

Genoa's prefect's office said it didn't immediately have official confirmation of the reports by ANSA news agency and other Italian news media Saturday that the bodies were found by rescuers overnight.

Firefighters also found the remains of a family of three, including a nine-year-old child, who had been traveling for a holiday.

"The fire service is continuing its inspection of the area in order to rule out the eventual presence of people not reported missing".

CEO Giovanni Castellucci said it was premature to respond to the government's plans to revoke the company's concession, but said his company could build a new bridge in eight months.

Ilaria Caprioglio, the mayor of the nearby town of Savona, said: "Now it is the time of grief... but we must think about the conditions of the roads of our region and the security of our infrastructure because these victims can not be followed by others".

In an earlier tweet, the firefighters said their work continued without pause and that overnight they had recovered the wreckage of a auto involved in the collapse.

The unnamed father of one victim said his son "will not become a number in the catalogue of deaths caused by Italian failures".

But some families have refused offers to join a state funeral, angry at the government for the disaster.

Dozens of vehicles dropped when a huge tower and a section of the Morandi bridge measuring about 200m (656ft) collapsed about 45m on to railway lines, a river and a warehouse.

The collapse over a dry riverbed "lacerated the heart of Genoa", said the city's archbishop, Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco.

Saturday was also a national day of mourning, in which state funerals were held in Genoa for only 18 of the victims.

Players and managers of Genoa's two football teams were among those attending the funeral.

Genoa's chief prosecutor, Francesco Cozzi, said on Thursday that 10-20 people were still missing.

Mr Conte confirmed on Friday that legal proceedings were under way to strip the motorway operator Autostrade per l'Italia of its contracts. They included people from Albania, Colombia, Chile, France, Jamaica, Romania, and Peru, according to the prefecture.

Investigators are working to see if a design flaw or improper maintenance might have caused the collapse on Tuesday.

Its collapse prompted fears over ageing infrastructure across the world.

Atlantia, the holding company that controls Autostrade per l'Italia, had no immediate comment. The government is demanding that the company rebuild the bridge at its own expense and within a set period of time.
