Apple reassures customers after Australian media reports hack by teen

16-year-old Apple fanboi admits to hacking firm's corporate network

The boy, whose name is being withheld, secured access to Apple's mainframe on multiple occasions over a period of about a year, reports Australian news outlet The Age.

According to The Age, the hacker was supposedly done in previous year when an Australian Federal Police raid at his home led investigators to a folder on his laptop containing pertinent files and instructions, labeled 'hacky hack hack'. Going through official channels is probably a better career path than breaking in and bragging about it to the hacking community.

According to his lawyer, the teen broke into Apple's systems repeatedly because he was an ardent fan of the trillion-dollar company.

During these intrusions, he downloaded 90GB of secure files - which he stored in a folder with the title "hacky hack hack" - and accessed customer accounts, the Children's Court heard on Thursday.

Pentagon: China’s army ‘likely training for strikes’ against U.S. targets
Activities around Taiwan and in the East and South China Sea are also alarming given Beijing's contested interests in these areas. The document warns that China "is likely preparing for a contingency to unify Taiwan with China by force".

Details are sketchy, but it sounds like the teen - who's described as being well-known in hacking circles - probably used virtual private networks (VPNs), Tor and other tools to try to hide his tracks. The Age reports that prosecutors told the court that the Australian Federal Police (AFP) raided the teen's home a year ago.

Apple has already issued a statement clarifying that the personal data of its customers was not compromised during this incident. According to the publication, the serial numbers of the laptops matched those tracked as the devices used to compromise the network, made possible by obtaining authorization keys.

An Apple spokesman said the company's information security personnel "discovered the unauthorized access, contained it, and reported the incident to law enforcement" without commenting further on the specifics of the case. A mobile phone along with a hard drive were also seized.

The defendant has pleaded guilty and will return to court next month for sentencing.
