Teams trying to save ailing orca practice feeding live fish

A baby orca whale was pushed by her mother after being born off the Canada coast near Victoria British Columbia. The new orca died soon after being born and was seen on Tuesday

An endangered, grieving orca is still carrying her dead calf more than two weeks after the newborn died, CBS affiliate KIRO reports.

Sheila Thornton, lead killer whale scientist with Fisheries Oceans Canada, said the whale looks more like a 2-year-old though it has always been small for her age.

They spotted J35 while searching for another of the 75 southern resident killer whales, labelled an endangered species in both Canada and the United States. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration had a permit for such efforts in USA waters. Experts gave her antibiotics through a dart and took a breath sample to help figure out whether she has an infection.

NOAA and the Center for Whale Research cite multiple factors threatening the killer whales, including a diminishing Chinook salmon population - which is their preferred fish - as well as increased pollution, water traffic, and increased noise - which stresses out the whales and interferes their ability to reproduce. Researchers spotted the 20-year-old whale and the calf off of Washington's Olympic Peninsula on Wednesday, the station says. She was moved into a floating net pen and veterinarians assessed her medical condition and treated her.

"We want to know whether she's eating, we want to know whether she regurgitates or vomits after she eats, we want to know whether she is defecating and the character of those defecations", said Marty Haulena, a veterinarian with the Vancouver Aquarium who has been helping with the effort.

"What they're working on this morning...to determine which method they're going to use, [is] based on the dose that they have configured for her", Rowles told ABC News on Tuesday.

Paul Manafort trial day 9: Prosecution hopes to rest its case
Elizabeth. "In new court filing prosecutors are fighting back after days of Judge Ellis growing increasingly angry at them". Prosecutors have said that Calk pushed through the loans for Manafort because he wanted a job in the Trump administration.

"Removing the calf would be a very, very hard decision, and obviously we would have to take many factors into consideration, so that's now not on the table", she said. Scientists are anxious about her and will watch her but don't have plans to help her or remove the calf. "I'm not even sure we would be successful".

A team of whale experts has injected an ailing killer whale with antibiotics in a rare emergency effort to save her.

"Even if her family is foraging for and sharing fish with her, J35 can not be getting the. nutrition she needs to regain any body-mass loss that would have naturally occurred during the gestation of her fetus and also additional loss of nutrition during these weeks of mourning", she said. She returned to her family of whales in Canada later that year and was seen with her calf in 2013.

The last time scientists rescued a killer whale in the region was in 2002, when they rehabilitated an orca known as Springer who was found alone.

"I am sobbing. I can't believe she is still carrying her calf around", Ms Giles said.

The orca was last seen off the coast of Washington on Wednesday. He said the whale is incredibly skinny but was swimming well and there were no obvious signs of abnormality with her skin.
