Canadian police say a suspect is in custody after at least four people - two of them police officers - were killed in a shooting in the eastern city of Fredericton, New Brunswick.

The Fredericton Police Department Twitter page also confirms that two of the people killed in the shooting are police officers.

The exact circumstances of the shooting remain unclear.

"The police were here earlier and wanted me to leave, but I said I couldn't leave my dog behind The police officer told me to stay away from the windows and to lock the doors".

Moore said he heard approximately four gunshots within a five-minute timespan during that hour.

She also reported that people were being escorted out of the area by police.

The Fredericton shootings come just four years after another traumatic event for police and the public in another New Brunswick city.

He said he heard two gunshots, and then three more.

It was a rare instance of gun violence in the Canadian province of New Brunswick.

David MacCoubrey says he awoke in his apartment on Brookside Drive around 7:07 a.m.

The incident in the town of Fredericton is said to be "ongoing". "The girls here, we were talking about Moncton and how it felt so close to what happened there".

"Our hearts are broken by the murder of our two fearless police officers".

He said the police searched his apartment.

One resident told CBC News that he heard a series of shots ring out around 7 am.

The shooting left two more people dead - both civilians, a man and woman - but police have not released their identities.

Burns has been a constable with the Fredericton Police since March 2016, according to a Facebook post by her husband Steven Burns.

By Friday afternoon, a memorial of flowers and messages was growing in front of the Fredericton police station.

"We're just up the street from where it happened, " MacDonald said.
