'Red tide' blamed for whale shark, turtle, dolphin carcasses on Florida beaches

A boat sails through a deepening algae bloom across the Caloosahatchee River in Labelle Florida on June 27

Gov. Rick Scott on Friday said he directed state agencies "to mobilize all available resources to address red tide impacts in Southwest Florida's coastal communities".

Officials say almost 400 sea turtles have died because of the toxic bloom.

Red tide blooms produce toxic chemicals that can affect both marine organisms and humans.

FWC marine turtle biologist Robbin Trindell says the increased number is due, in part, to the red tide affecting numerous beaches where the turtles nest during the summer time.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission reports that dead fish have been found in Pinellas, Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte, Lee, Collier and Monroe counties and include such species as grouper, trout, eel, snook, tarpon, hardhead catfish and assorted baitfish. "We're even seeing large loggerhead sea turtles being effected, and that's because this red tide has lasted into the nesting season".

Dead sea life continues to wash ashore on beaches in the area, according to the News-Press, which is documenting the deaths in stories and a photo gallery on its website. The FWC reports that this recent bloom has been monitored since November.

Woman Becomes First Person in Denmark Fined for Wearing a Face Veil
Mr Borcher said: 'During the fight her niqab came off, but by the time we arrived she had put it back on again'. A 28-year-old female was fined after getting into a fight with another woman, who had tried to tear of her veil.

Also this week, a manatee in distress from exposure to red tide in southwest Florida was taken to SeaWorld Orlando for rehabilitation.

Most algae blooms are beneficial to the ocean, providing a source of food for marine creatures.

For people with severe or chronic respiratory conditions, such as emphysema or asthma, red tide can cause serious illness.

Usually, cold spells break up or kill off some of the algae, but not this time.

A combination of red tide along Florida's coastline and blue-green algae in rivers and canals is killing a variety of animals in Florida waters this summer. "That's due, in part, to having red tide and a very cold winter", said Mezich.
