Woman Becomes First Person in Denmark Fined for Wearing a Face Veil

English Defence League supporters chant during a demonstration in Bradford city centre

Mr Borcher said: 'During the fight her niqab came off, but by the time we arrived she had put it back on again'.

The police took a photo of the woman in the niqab, as well as securing other video evidence from surveillance cameras in the shopping centre.

Denmark's ban on niqabs and other full-face coverings in public spaces went into effect on August 1, drawing condemnation from many who say the law is a form of religious discrimination.

A 28-year-old female was fined after getting into a fight with another woman, who had tried to tear of her veil.

The woman was told she would receive a fine of 1,000 kroner (Dh570) in the post, and was told to either remove her veil or leave the public space.

Chinese smartphone maker Huawei's sub-brand Honor is all set to launch its flagship smartphone - Honor Note 10 in China today. The smartphone will feature the GPU Turbo which will squeeze out better graphics and battery performance.

On Wednesday night protesters gathered in the capital to demonstrate against law, with women in traditional burqas and veils standing alongside people with makeshift coverings. One woman has also been charged with violating the full-face veil law.

First-time offenders risk a fine of 1,000 kroner while repeat offences could trigger fines of up to 10,000 kroner (£1,200) or a jail sentence of up to six months.

Balaclavas, masks, false beards and other accessories are included in the ban.

Human rights campaigners have slammed the ban as a violation of women's rights, while supporters argue it enables better integration of Muslim immigrants into Danish society. But the law - popularly known as the "burqa ban" - is seen by some as directed at Muslim women who choose to wear the face veil in public.

Similar full or partial bans against wearing a veil are also in place in France, Austria, Bulgaria and the German state of Bavaria.
