Here's How NASA Created America's Private Space Industry (HBO)

NASA names astronauts for first manned US space launches since 2011

These pioneering flights to the International Space Station aboard commercially built crew capsules will be the first leaving United States soil to put people into orbit since the iconic space shuttle program ended in 2011. SpaceX will launch the Crew Dragon, while Boeing will launch its CST-100 Starliner.

He said the announcement advances "our great American vision" and strengthens America's leadership in space.

In 2014, SpaceX and Boeing received contracts for $2.6 billion and $4.2 billion, respectively, to develop so-called space taxis that can ferry astronauts to and from the space station. He flew on two flights of the space shuttle including the final mission, Atlantis's STS-135.

For the past seven years, NASA astronauts have hitched rides to the orbiting outpost on Russia's Soyuz spacecraft - at a cost of some $80 million a seat.

The agency assigned nine astronauts to crew the first test flight and mission of both Boeing's CST-100 Starliner and SpaceX's Crew Dragon. Boeing and Space Adventures, the USA company that arranged space tourist flights on Russian Soyuz spacecraft, have a partnership that could allow paying passengers to ride in a fifth seat on CST-100 missions for shorter-duration missions.

Chris Ferguson: While Ferguson has been retired from NASA since 2011, he has worked with Boeing's Starliner program for years, earning him a key post on the first crewed test of the system.

VICE News spoke with Dennis Stone, one of the founding members of NASA's commercial investment program, to hear the story behind the agency's success in backing private spaceflight.

NASA's Commercial Crew Program is facilitating the development of a US commercial crew space transportation capability with the goal of achieving safe, reliable and cost-effective access to and from the International Space Station and low-Earth orbit.

However, the most interesting highlight of the latest leak is that the 512GB variant of the Galaxy Note 9 has now been confirmed . On top of the onboard storage, the Galaxy Note9 will also support up to a full 1TB of additional storage via microSD.

Josh Cassada: Coming to NASA after a career as a test pilot in the Navy, Cassada was chosen as an astronaut in 2013.

Victor Glover, 42, and Michael Hopkins, 49, will fly on the first operational mission of SpaceX's crewed Dragon.

During an announcement Friday to introduce the astronauts at Johnson Space Center in Texas, NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine said the "health of NASA and our space exploration program is as strong as it's ever been".

Williams has spent 322 days in space as part of two expeditions: 14/15 and 32/33. The missions will likely include veterans from the US' Space Shuttle program, Gizmodo reported. When he was in high school, Ferguson became "intrigued" with joining the Navy and flying jets, he said.

Williams said in Friday's interview that the new mission was "a test pilot's dream". SpaceX aims to launch an uncrewed test flight in November of this year, with a Boeing test flight scheduled for late 2018 or early 2019.

"It will be thrilling to see our astronauts lift off from American soil, and we can't wait to see them aboard the International Space Station", Mr. Geyer said.

Boeing's and SpaceX's commercial spacecraft may also open the space station - and more broadly, Earth orbit - to more privately-funded visitors and spaceflight participants from countries that do not have their own domestic crewed spacecraft and rockets. Bridenstine asked some what they thought about the idea that they might have initially been heading to space from Russian Federation, but will now be on board US -based launches.
