White House trots out five top officials to reassure election safety

Russia calls new US election meddling claim'hysteria

President Donald Trump called Wednesday for Attorney General Jeff Sessions to put an end to special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation probe, a day after Trump's former campaign chairman went on trial.

With Sessions' removal from the Russian Federation probe, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein assumed oversight of the investigation and named Mueller to lead it after Trump in May 2017 fired James Comey, who as director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, was at the time heading the agency's Russian Federation probe.

As head of the justice department, Sessions has authority over the special counsel investigation, and although he has recused himself, Sessions could disrupt the Mueller investigation by ordering deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein to fire Mueller or by firing Rosenstein.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders echoed that interpretation, telling reporters Trump "wants to see it come to an end as he has stated many times and we look forward to that happening". "This is an attempt to obstruct justice hiding in plain sight. This is a threat we need to take extremely seriously and to tackle and respond to with fierce determination and focus".

"Who is the president who said we are going to drive down the cost of energy and make the United States the most efficient oil exporter in the world...?" "Russian Collusion with the Trump Campaign, one of the most successful in history, is a TOTAL HOAX", Trump tweeted Wednesday in the context of other tweets about Manafort.

Mr. Trump has told advisers he is eager to meet with investigators to clear himself of wrongdoing, the people said.

An African-American pastor praised President Donald Trump and his administration's efforts in communities of faith, particularly in the African-American community, at a roundtable at the White House on August 1.

Paul Manafort to remain locked up during trial
But Manafort doesn't appear to have "valuable enough information to make these charges go away altogether", Griffin said. Manafort had been under federal investigation since 2014 over suspicion of illegal lobbying and financial improprieties.

The illegal activity included criminal efforts to suppress voting and provide illegal campaign financing, cyber attacks against voting infrastructure, along with computer intrusions targeting elected officials and others, U.S. officials said. "America must never accept it".

The national security adviser, a longtime Russian Federation hawk, also defended the president's much-maligned press conference after his tête-à-tête with Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, when Trump did not address Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election. "He worked for me for a very short time", he tweeted.

"I have great confidence in my intelligence people, but I will tell you that President Putin was extremely strong and powerful in his denial today", Trump said after talks with Putin in Helsinki, Finland, on July 16.

Mr. Trump has repeatedly termed the probe as "a hoax".

Manafort was hired in late March 2016 as Trump's campaign chairman and resigned in mid-August of that year - a stretch that included the Republican convention at which Trump was formally nominated.

Nielsen said that "our adversaries have shown they have the willingness and capability to interfere in our elections", and "DHS has and continues to work closely with state and local election officials throughout the country by offering a range of services to help identify weaknesses in their election systems".
