Six dead in Zimbabwe on day of violence linked to election

Election officials tally ballots during counting operations for Zimbabwe's general election at the David Livingston Primary school in central Harare

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission is expected to announce nationwide results this afternoon.

Zanu-PF, in power since the country gained its independence 38 years ago, has won a two-thirds parliamentary majority. If he had won this election the result will have been announced long back but they are trying to massage the figures to try to advance fictious and fallacious results.

With Government championing new investment under the mantra "Zimbabwe is open for business", several worldwide investors have already starting coming to the country including from the West, which previously had a frosty relationship with the previous dispensation led by for president Mr Robert Mugabe. A search warrant was issued on Thursday night.

"Though we may have been divided at the polls, we are united in our dreams", Mnangagwa said on Twitter. "They run this country".

Police raided the headquarters of Chamisa's Movement for Democratic Change party while a lawyers' group said Chamisa was being investigated for allegedly inciting violence. "The police are there to do their job", police spokeswoman Charity Charamba said.

Mnangagwa's spokesperson, George Charamba, insisted that Thursday was a normal working day.

While election day was peaceful in a break from the past, deadly violence Wednesday against people protesting alleged vote-rigging reminded many Zimbabweans of the decades of military-backed repression under Mugabe.

Wednesday's violence, which followed a relatively orderly election, dashes Mnangagwa's hopes of repairing the image of a country that had become synonmous with corruption and economic collapse under Mugabe. How can he allege that General Chiwenga wants to assassinate him. Mnangagwa himself remains under USA sanctions.

"We categorically denounce the excessive use of force against unarmed civilians", former Ghanaian president John Mahama said on behalf of the Commonwealth.

Can post-Mugabe vote heal Zimbabwe?

Mr Mnangagwa said the government was in talks with Mr Chamisa to defuse the crisis and proposed an independent investigation to bring those who were behind the violence to justice.

China, Zimbabwe's main global ally, said it hoped all sides would put the country's interests first following a "generally peaceful and orderly" election. He said he had been talking to Chamisa to try to defuse tensions.
