Thousands Evacuate due to Mendocino Fires

California: Mendocino Complex Fire Explodes to 28000 Acres

Firefighters struggling to contain destructive Northern California wildfires found themselves facing a new blaze that erupted Tuesday and drove through a rural area near a national forest.

Almost 1,000 dwellings and more than 400 other buildings were reduced to ruins in what state officials now rank as the seventh-most destructive wildfire in California history.

The practice of back-burning is seen as a last resort measure to stop the further spread of fire from particular areas.

Thousands of people were allowed to return to their homes this week but the blaze continues to burn and has scorched 180 square miles (470 square kilometers).

Temperatures will soar into the lower 100s in many places, Norman said, and whipping winds will be "wildly fluctuating as the fires generate their own localized wind".

"The weather has really been working with us", said Jude Olivas, a spokesman for the interagency firefighting team.

The fire has claimed six lives, including two firefighters, since gale-force winds whipped the blaze into a flaming cyclone that jumped a river and roared with little warning into Redding and adjacent communities in the scenic Shasta-Trinity region on the night of July 26. Thousands more remain evacuated because of the blaze ignited July 23 by a spark from a steel wheel rim on a trailer towed with a flat tire. The fire was nearly 35 percent contained, and thousands of residents were allowed to return to their neighborhoods.

Near Yosemite, the Ferguson Fire had burned 90 square miles and was 33 percent contained.

UPDATE 9:25 pm: David Dirck PIO with CalFire explained that the fire started at 3:30 pm.

Bush had returned to his mobile home in the community of Keswick last Tuesday after undergoing quadruple heart bypass surgery but he was unable to drive and would have needed help to evacuate when the fire came through the neighborhood on Thursday, his sister, Kathi Gaston, told the Redding Record Searchlight.

Gaston said her brother had wanted to stay in his own home, but he had spotty cell service and, with the power out, he might not have gotten word of the fire. If a fire is spreading and evacuations are being ordered, or if a gunman is on a school campus and hostages are being taken, Lucy (lparesh@lalate.com) has it covered.

"It was a firestorm when we left", Lister said. Park officials had hoped to reopen Friday.

It was the longest closure at Yosemite since 1997, when floods closed the park for over two months.
