Plane carrying over 100 people crashes in Mexico

Reports of an Aero Mexico jet crash near Durango Mexico

The jetliner crashed while taking off during a severe storm, smacking down in a field almost intact then catching fire, and officials said it appeared everyone on board escaped the flames. The plane then skidded off the runway, stopping about 300 meters (985 feet) away, Aispuro said. Both engines were knocked loose.

The state governor said the plane was caught by a gust of wind that sent it downwards.

Passengers were able to escape on the plane's emergency slides before it was engulfed in flames, he said.

The fire around the wings eliminated the possibility of using wing exits, so Mr Herrera said he moved towards a back exit and started helping other people leave the craft.

Cardoza said in an interview that around 85 people had suffered mostly light injuries, adding that the fire resulting from the accident had been put out.

"I'm fine by the grace of God", said Parsa, in a tweet.

Flores said paramedics took about 20 minutes to arrive and explained that she lost all her personal belongings including her passport in the crash.

"All my solidarity and wishes of fast recovery for the wounded", he wrote on Twitter late Tuesday.

Aispuro had said earlier there were no figures of the injured or deceased. He described a unusual accident scene in which some passengers got out under their power, and some even wandered back to the airport to seek out relatives. The plane, an Embraer 190, crashed close to the airport just moments after take-off, BBC reported.

The head of Mexico's civil aviation agency, Luis Gerardo Fonseca, said it could take months to know the cause of the crash. Some people had burns on a quarter of their bodies, said Durango state Health Ministry spokesman Fernando Ros. The pilot of the plane was seriously injured. Israel Solano Mejia says that "the majority of passengers left (the plane) under their own power".

Guadalupe Victoria airport was closed after the crash.

The airline said it has operated the 10-year-old aircraft since 2014. "It fell where the tarmac ended and that is what caused the fire, as well as serious damage to the plane", Aispuro said to Mexican broadcaster Televisa. Durango is 900 kms northwest of Mexico City. The aircraft was carrying 101 people on board, including 97 passengers and 4 crew members.

Embraer did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Ambulances lined up at the accident site to ferry the injured to hospitals.

Ninety-nine passengers, including nine children and two infants, as well as four crew members were on board, the airline said.

An Aeromexico flight crashed in Durango, Mexico Tuesday, July 31.

The plane had tried to take off in a severe storm, but smacked down on its belly in a nearby field.

Brazilian plane maker Embraer said it is ready to assist authorities investigating the crash of one of its planes.
