Paul Manafort to remain locked up during trial

Manafort trial poses first courtroom test for Mueller

Paul Manafort will have his day in court this week.

The indictment was brought by special counsel Robert Mueller, the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director who is looking into Russian meddling in the presidential election, but the charges are not connected to Manafort's time as Trump's campaign chairman.

The high-profile trial is the first to arise out of Mueller's investigation into the Trump campaign's alleged collusion with Russian Federation. Mr Manafort denies all charges, and at one point had sought to get them dismissed.

Mr Manafort, 69, faces 18 criminal counts, which centre on allegations that he hid much of the $60 million he earned in Ukraine in undisclosed overseas bank accounts and failed to pay taxes on it.

Paul Manafort, U.S. President Donald Trump's former campaign chair, was sent to jail pending a trial after his bail was revoked. CNN reports the charges against Manafort state $75 million flowed through offshore accounts managed by Manafort and his former business partner, Rick Gates.

Manafort had been under federal investigation since 2014 over suspicion of illegal lobbying and financial improprieties.

The exhibits show that Manafort did not just work on multiple Ukrainian elections but did political consulting and lobbying work for Yanukovych outside specific campaigns.

Trump Org CFO subpoenaed in Cohen probe
On Friday he called Cohen "an incredible liar who's got a tremendous motive to lie now because he's got nothing to give". The statement, made by Trump in morning tweets , escalates the public feud between the president and his longtime fixer.

Mueller has submitted more than 500 pieces of evidence, including tax filings and mortgage statements, and pictures of Manafort's expensive watches and homes. Prosecutors will also argue that Manafort fraudulently obtained millions more in bank loans, including during his time on the campaign. And they won't learn that Manafort's co-defendant in the Washington case is a business associate named Konstantin Kilimnik, who lives in Russia and who US authorities assert has connections to Russian intelligence.

"I don't see what relation this indictment has with what the special counsel is authorized to investigate", Ellis said at a hearing in May.

Manafort remained defiant, vowing to fight the charges.

But Manafort doesn't appear to have "valuable enough information to make these charges go away altogether", Griffin said.

Legal experts said Manafort may be hoping to be found not guilty - or holding out hopes of a presidential pardon.

Five other defendants have entered guilty pleas, including three former Trump campaign aides who admitted to lying to investigators.

"It probably won't do him much good because he has all these money laundering charges against him, which could be charged against him in NY state", Akerman said. "The choice there is serving time in a NY state prison like Rikers Island, as opposed to a plush federal prison". And there's always the possibility that Manafort could take a plea deal during the trial if his defense falls apart, opting for a lighter sentence in exchange of telling Mueller's team anything he may know about possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation. Witnesses have been told to avoid any mention of President Trump or anything related to his 2016 campaign. An acquittal would support efforts by Trump and his allies to portray the probe as a "witch hunt".
