Vettel on top again in final Hungarian practice

Max Verstappen

Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas and Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen, who were running in second and third place, respectively, when Vettel crashed, finished the race in second and third, as they came into the pits during the safety auto period while Hamilton, who was running in fourth when Vettel crashed, stayed out on the track to inherit the race lead before going on to win. It was such a tricky session as you could see we started out with a large part of the circuit dry and making the right calls and getting the timing ideal and spot on is everything in these conditions.

Vettel had been fastest in Friday and Saturday practice, with track record times in the hot and dry conditions that left the Mercedes drivers spinning and struggling for grip.

Championship leader Lewis Hamilton was fourth in the second Mercedes behind the two Finns, but ahead of the two Red Bulls of Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen.

The Australian driver is aiming to go one better in qualifying after recording the third fastest lap in second practice.

Mercedes have been able to count on more power in qualifying, however.

"We didn't suffer on the softs", Hamilton said on Saturday night. "Tomorrow I will have a fight on my hands", said Ricciardo. If anything we weren't as good as [Ferrari] were on the ultra.

Max Verstappen
The Dutchman will start from seventh on the grid

"You can plan it as much as you want but things will go quickly and obviously we will try to make the right decisions on the tyres when it comes and hopefully make a good getaway and see what we can do".

Red Bull are expected to be among the favourites at a comparatively slow track that suits the aerodynamic qualities of their auto much more than Mercedes, whose drivers seemed to lack grip, and is less engine dependent.

The Briton has won five times previously at the Hungaroring, but never in a year in which he has gone on to take the championship.

The key then becomes making the tyres last in the opening stint with high fuel, as overheating rears would open up the opportunity to overtaking.

Hulkenberg did not run for the last half-hour after stopping out on track with an engine shutdown.
