Cohen: Trump approved 2016 Trump Tower meeting with Russians

Michael Cohen and Donald Trump

President Donald Trump made headlines Friday morning by denying his former lawyer's allegation that the president had prior knowledge of a June 2016 meeting Donald Trump Jr., Jared Kushner and Paul Manafort had with a Russian lawyer at Trump Tower.

Trump said in a Twitter post after a CNN report that his longtime lawyer Michael Cohen said Trump knew of the meeting in advance.

"By Cohen's account, Trump approved going ahead with the meeting with the Russians", CNN notes, citing sources familiar with Cohen's claim. Cohen has no hard evidence, the sources say, but is willing to testify to Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

If Cohen's telling the truth, she said, both Trump and Trump Jr. would be in trouble.

President Donald Trump (L) and his son Donald Trump, Jr., walk to a motorcade from the North Portico of the White House on July 5, 2018 in Washington, D.C.

Reporter Emily Jane Fox says that contrary to some speculation, sources close to Cohen say that his team did not leak the story.

Mueller has already indicted 31 people - including 12 Russian intelligence agents - for hacking computer networks of the Democratic Party.

I have only just started with my first training session today but I didn't have a long holiday so I didn't lose too much. That should not be a huge problem this season as Liverpool have tried to build their squad depth.

Rudy Giuliani, Trump's attorney, furiously denied the new reports in an appearance on CNN late Thursday, arguing that Cohen is a "pathological liar" who can not be trusted.

McDougal's story was never published and she is now suing American Media. In addition to the campaign we still had a company to run.

Trump, who stands accused of pliancy towards Russian President Vladimir Putin, insists no president has been as "tough" on Russia and denies any collusion between his campaign and Moscow. On the tape, then-candidate Trump and Cohen can be heard discussing potential hush-money payments meant to squash former Playboy model Karen McDougal's story about an alleged affair she had with Trump.

On Thursday, the New York Times reported that Mueller is examining Trump's tweets as part of his wide-ranging investigation into the Trump campaign's contacts with Russian Federation and Trump's possible obstruction of the probe.

In an interview early this month, Cohen said his family and the country commanded his "first loyalty", raising the prospect he could be preparing to cooperate with prosecutors. His lawyer Lanny Davis declined to comment. If Cohen, who specialized in making deals and making Trump's problems go away, were to cut a deal, he would do so with an eye toward eliminating or cutting his potential punishment.

Cohen, who worked as the top lawyer at the Trump Organization for several years, often referred to himself as Trump's "fixer".
