11 babies die after pregnant women given Viagra

A hospital in Amsterdam said it is immediately stopping a drug trial where pregnant moms were given sildenafil to help with underdeveloped babies. Eleven of the babies in the trial died

By Jop de VriezeJul. That research has now been temporarily stopped, she said.

TUESDAY, July 24, 2018 (HealthDay News) - There have been 11 lung-related infant deaths after pregnant women in the Netherlands were given sildenafil (Viagra) to boost the growth of their babies while in the womb. A data and safety monitoring committee, however, had looked at the unblinded evidence halfway through the study and wanted to talk.

The Queensland study, using Sildenafil which is sold as Viagra, has been paused as a precaution.

The researchers informed the women that common side-effects were dizziness, rosy cheeks, headaches and an increased sexual appetite.

Seventeen of those women's babies developed lung problems and 11 have died as a result.

In the placebo group, three developed the disorder, but all of them survived.

The study was conducted in 10 hospitals of the Netherlands and was discontinued only last week.

It comes after an alarming number of mothers losing their babies. Six other newborns were also diagnosed with a lung condition that breached their ability to obtain sufficient oxygen, however, these 6 did survive.

The Dutch trial was created to investigate whether Viagra was useful in promoting the growth of severely underdeveloped babies in the womb. That poses a hard dilemma for doctors: Inducing birth too early increases the risk of complications, but waiting too long could lead to developmental anomalies or stillbirth.

Multiple people shot at Danforth and Logan Aves
"This is an attack against innocent families and our entire city", Toronto Mayor John Tory said in a city council meeting Monday. Meanwhile, John Tulloch, another witness, said that he was getting out of his vehicle on the Danforth when he heard the gunshots.

Viagra, which is the better known name of the generic drug sildenafil, is more commonly used for men with erectile problems. Yet it is not approved for such use in pregnant women by any regulatory body, so physicians have been using it in a so-called off-label manner. He said that earlier, small-scale studies into using the drug had had positive results.

It can mean babies are born prematurely, with a very low birth weight and poor chances of survival.

In these women, the compromised placenta was affecting the growth of the foetuses in the womb. The hospital said that sildenafil may have been harmful to babies after birth.

But she supports the decision made by Dutch investigators to discontinue to the study. So we said "yes, sure, let's go".

In a statement, Pfizer, the maker of Viagra, expressed its "sympathy for the trial participants and their families" but said the company had nothing to do with the trial. Some of his patients would ask whether they should take it.

"We need to be careful at this point to find out more".

"As yet, it is unclear whether this increase in pulmonary hypertension was caused by sildenafil treatment".

The researchers say it appears the drug, which stimulates blood flow, may have caused damage to the babies' lungs, ultimately leading to their death.

It's also unclear why the deaths happened only in the Dutch trial.

"Our preliminary outcomes are promising", he said. "Doctors might have prescribed this drug for years off-label, assuming it was safe and effective". "But we should always keep in mind that by not conducting this study, there would have been a risk as well".
