North Korea hands over the possible remains of American war dead

United Nations honour guards carry boxes containing remains believed to be from American servicemen killed during the Korean War after their arrival from North Korea at Osan Air Base

"North Korea remains our most immediate challenge and I know that it will be Pacific Air Forces on the ground in North Korea that will repatriate some of our Korean war dead later today", said Adm. Phil Davidson, the new commander of the Hawaii-based U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, formerly called Pacific Command.

North Korean officials handed over the probable remains on the anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended the conflict, which claimed the lives of tens of thousands of Americans, over 600,000 Chinese, 600,000 Korean soldiers and over a million Korean civilians.

A US plane flies to North Korea to pick up over 50 sets of remains of USA service members who were killed during the Korean war.

CNN reported on Tuesday that the USA had not yet received confirmation from the North that the remains would be returned, and that Pyongyang had not given either the us or South Korea the go-ahead for the transfer.

The US military transport plane took off from the Osan Air Base for North Korea at 5.55am local time, South Korea's Yonhap news agency said, citing a Seoul government source. The group collected the remains of what were believed to have been 220 us soldiers.

"North Korea recently took two truckloads of wooden boxes to be used for the remains repatriation".

U.S. Forces Korea earlier this month moved about 100 transfer caskets near the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) in anticipation of repatriations.

United States forensic specialists are to conduct a more in-depth assessment of the remains as well as an examination of any military uniform, identification tags or documentation at Osan Air Base.

During their summit last month, Kim Jong Un had promised Donald Trump that the handover would happen - making this the first tangible result from the talks.

North Korea has held out the return of remains as a symbol of its goodwill and intention to improve ties with Washington.

More than 35,000 Americans were killed on the Korean Peninsula during the war, out of which around 7,700 are still considered missing, including 5,300 in North Korea alone, according to the Pentagon. "It's hard for North Korea to do it for technological reasons but it isn't actually strategically or politically costly for them", Kelly said.

"For reasons of United States politics, the alliance commitment would effectively end if a peace treaty came about". Its officials also agreed to resume joint U.S.

"Considering the fact that declaration of an end to the Korean War is only a political measure, its implications can be maximized during a meeting with national leaders", said Cho Seong-ryoul, a senior researcher at the Institute for National Security Strategy.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that the country is still producing fissile material. After the Japanese surrender, the Soviet Union occupied the area north of the 38th parallel and the United States occupied the area south until 1948.

Washington has maintained Pyongyang wouldn't get sanctions relief and significant security and economic rewards unless it firmly commits to a process of completely and verifiably eliminating its nuclear weapons.
