Russian FM demands release of citizen detained in US

The detention came following a Monday meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Helsinki.

He said: "Interference with the domestic affairs of the United States - do you really believe that someone acting from the Russian territory could have influenced the United States and influenced the choice of millions of Americans?"

And he seemed to endorse a plan Putin proposed that would allow special counsel Robert Mueller's team to work with Russian investigators to question 12 Russians indicted last week in the investigation into Russian election meddling.

Russian Federation is ready to discuss a proposed new meeting between Putin and Trump, Interfax news agency cited Russia's ambassador to the United States, Anatoly Antonov, as saying on Friday.

Trump's anger over having to answer Lemire's question - not his failure in attempting to do so - lingered on.

U.S. prosecutors say Maria Butina, 29, exploited her close links with the powerful NRA gun lobby while posing as a visiting graduate student to endear herself with senior Republicans, guided by one of Russian President Vladimir Putin's major political supporters, Alexander Torshin.

Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats appeared to be shocked on Thursday when he learned Putin was being invited by the Trump administration to the nation's capital after spending much of the week reiterating warnings about Russia's dubious intentions regarding the USA electoral process. I have President Putin - he just said it's not Russian Federation.

"Say that again?" Coats offered.

When Coats learned during an interview Thursday at the Aspen festival that Putin was being invited to visit the U.S.in the fall, he made no effort to hide the freakish nature of the situation.

Reaction to his comments were swift and critical - even among his Republican Party. That resolution had the support of Arizona Republican Senator Jeff Flake.

After Trump's performance at the Helsinki press conference, Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats issued a forceful statement on where the United States intelligence community stands on Russian election interference.

Antonov called Monday's summit in Helsinki a "key event" in global politics and laughed off suggestions that the two men made any "secret deals". Trump later backtracked and said he did accept the conclusion of the agencies, and he said he misspoke when he said he didn't see any reason it "would" be Russian Federation, saying he meant to say "wouldn't".

Moscow denies USA allegations it interfered in the election and Trump denies any campaign collusion.

Meanwhile, the White House on Thursday said it was no longer considering an unprecedented proposal that would have seen Russian interrogators question former USA ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul and other US citizens-in exchange for allowing special counsel Robert Mueller's team to interview 12 Russians indicted last week for allegedly hacking the emails of Democrats during the 2016 election.

Trump also caused confusion when he appeared to tell reporters Russian Federation was not targeting the 2018 election with further cyberattacks; the White House claimed he was responding to a different question.

One of the heroes of Helsinki Week in Washington has been Dan Coats, the director of national intelligence. So his request to question McFaul, the U.S. Ambassador to Russian Federation between 2012 and 2014, was both an outrage and a test.

As noted above, the USA intelligence community explicitly concluded that Russian Federation, under the direction of Putin, meddled in the election to bolster Trump's chances of winning.

"I am as opposed to Russians interfering in our elections as I am to racists trying to divide our country". He "looks at Vladimir Putin and he just sees a man who has control of violence, who can order interventions in foreign countries at the click of a hand".

But on Thursday Mr Trump said the meeting was a "great success" and he was looking forward to their next meeting. The president also agreed to send lethal weapons to Ukraine - a step that Obama resisted. And yet he didn't press Putin on the issue when it came up in their press conference. There was also Putin's controversial suggestion that the USA could sit in on the questioning of the 12 indicted Russians - but only if the US would allow Russia to question of Americans whom the Kremlin has accused of committing "illegal activities".

Following his summit with Vladimir Putin, President Trump has been fighting accusations he failed to stand up to the Russian leader.
