Trump asserts Russian Federation not targeting USA, contradicting intel

Trump writes giant, misspelled ‘THERE WAS NO COLUSION’ reminder on Russia statement

Trump is defending his meeting with Russia President Vladimir Putin and a press conference in which he said the USA had been "foolish" and doubted US intelligence that found Russia meddled in the 2016 election. Trump now says he accepts the United States intelligence community's conclusions that Russia DID meddle in the 2016 election.

"The sentence should have been, 'I don't see any reason why I wouldn't, or why it wouldn't be Russia"' instead of "why it would", Trump said Tuesday of the comments he had made in Helsinki. "Sort of a double negative".

When asked during the press event if he believed the assertion from USA spy agencies that Russian Federation meddled with US politics, Trump deflected the question and suggested that he was siding with Putin, who denied any interference in US politics.

"So many people at the higher ends of intelligence loved my press conference performance in Helsinki", Trump tweeted early Wednesday morning. The next day, before meeting with members of Congress from the Republican party, trump made a statement at the White house in which he clarified that he misspoke, and actually quite trusts the conclusions of American intelligence. Pelosi also wondered whether they actually signaled a change in the president's approach to Russia's leader.

Mr Wilson said as things stand, Republicans will be sticking with Mr Trump as their 2020 presidential candidate despite their differences with their leader.

The president also said Monday that Putin's denials of interference were "extremely strong and powerful".

Meanwhile, Republican Sen. Marco Rubio said, "it's what I wish he would have said initially, and I'm glad he said it now".

"I also think that many USA presidents have made the mistake to think that they can reset our relations with Russia", Hurd later said.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said Trump's comments on Tuesday were another sign of weakness, particularly his statement that it "could be other people" responsible for the election meddling. "If Republicans are as outraged as they claim, then issue the subpoena today", he demanded.

He also said he misspoke when he said Monday that "President Putin says it's not Russian Federation".

This means that the poll registered no drop in Trump's approval from the outrage expressed on many cable news channels and on social media.

It came as the fallout grew over what was dubbed Mr Trump's "surrender summit" and "treason summit". "The sentence should have been, 'I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be Russian Federation'". "I just want to have this country be safe".

The drama continued as Trump headed to his next stop, the U.K. His first official visit was overshadowed by fallout from the rhetorical grenade he'd lobbed at British Prime Minister Theresa May before arriving.

Reading mainly from a prepared statement, Trump said on Tuesday he had complete faith in USA intelligence agencies and accepted their conclusions.

Holding of copy of the House Intelligence Committee's March 2018 report on Russian election meddling, the anchor said there was no question that Moscow had attacked the American democratic process.
