Trump sets expectations low for Helsinki summit with Putin

President Donald Trump and British Prime Minister Theresa May hold hands at the conclusion of their joint news conference at Chequers in Buckinghamshire England Friday

About 2,500 protesters demonstrated in support of human rights, democracy and the environment in Helsinki on Sunday, a day before U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin hold a summit in the Finnish capital.

"But I go in with low expectations, I'm not going in with high expectations", Trump said. "I'd like to see him complete whatever report he's going to submit and move on with things", said Lee.

But as Trump and Putin prepare to arrive in Helsinki, the source with knowledge of the discussions said there is still no set, organized agenda for the summit.

The U.S. has no extradition treaty with Moscow and can't compel Russian Federation to hand over citizens.

"I will absolutely bring that up", Trump said of Russian meddling in the 2016 election. Clinton, Trump's opponent in the 2016 presidential election, tweeted on Sunday night. "But I will absolutely, firmly ask the question", Trump said. I believe that having a meeting with Chairman Kim [Jong Un of North Korea] was a good thing.

The Republican Trump, rather than criticizing Russian Federation for hacking into computer servers to linked to U.S. Democrats, laid the blame on his political opponents at the Democratic committee for lax computer security two years ago compared to the Republican National Committee.

His latest statements come days after the special counsel indicted 12 Russian intelligence agents for interference in the 2016 USA presidential election.

"The state of bilateral relations is very bad", Kremlin adviser Yuri Ushakov said Friday.

Call To Ban President From Government-Owned Scottish Airport
Trump is set to depart Scotland on Sunday (July 15) for a meeting with the Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, Finland. Most of the controversy has centred on his other course, known as Trump International Golf Links.

Asked whether Trump would ask Putin to turn over the 12 military intelligence officials, US national security adviser John Bolton called the idea "pretty silly" and said doing so would put the president in a "weak position". Republican Sen. John McCain has also said Trump should not meet with Putin unless he holds the Russian president accountable.

He said Trump is going into the summit with a stronger hand because of the indictments.

"Every American president, Democrat and Republican alike, comes in thinking that the problem lay with his predecessor, and he will be the one to fix the US-Russian relationship".

President asserted that he could be "given the great city of Moscow as retribution for all of the sins and evils committed by Russia" but then would return to "criticism that it wasn't good enough - that I should have gotten Saint Petersburg in addition!"

But Trump said in a tweet that he's received "many calls from leaders of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation countries" thanking him for helping "to get them focused on financial obligations, both present & future". I think the US has been foolish. I don't think you'll have any, 'Gee, I did it.

The grand jury charges shine a brighter spotlight on Trump's treatment of Putin, who has repeatedly denied Russian Federation sought to skew the election which Trump, a Republican, unexpectedly won. There are no expectations of breakthroughs on either side, though basic common interests such as preventing a nuclear war or avoiding inadvertent clashes in Syria - where US and Russian troops support opposing sides - are likely to be packaged as results out of Helsinki.

Huntsman on Sunday said that it was "highly unlikely" the United States would recognize Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea, but would not rule it out.

"Trump is the ideal partner for a detente without concessions", Alexander Baunov, a foreign-policy specialist at the independent Carnegie Moscow Center think tank, recently wrote. "They want to do well and we want to do well".
