Trump Says European Union Is America’s Biggest ‘Foe’

President Trump named the European Union as a foe of the United States. More

In an interview from Scotland with "CBS Evening News," the president told anchor Jeff Glor that the European Union with its 28 members, many of which are America's longest standing and closest allies, is a foe.

"I think we have a lot of foes", Trump said, responding to a question put forward by by CBS News' Jeff Glor. "Now, you wouldn't think of the European Union, but they're a foe", Trump replied.

Pressed on describing the E.U.as a USA foe - commonly considered a synonym for enemy or opponent - Trump said "I love those countries" but "in a trade sense, they've really taken advantage of us and many of those countries are in North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and they weren't paying their bills".

He continued: "Russia is a foe in certain respects. China is a foe economically, certainly they are a foe", President Trump began his answer. "But, in a trade sense, they've really taken advantage of us and many of those countries are in North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and they weren't paying their bills".

On the eve of the Brussels summit, Tusk advised Trump to be more appreciative of allies because the United States doesn't "have that many".

Trump also said he hadn't thought of pressing Russian President Vladimir Putin on extraditing the dozen Russian officials charged with hacking Democratic emails.

Trump recently took aim at North Atlantic Treaty Organisation on Twitter before saying last week in a meeting with other North Atlantic Treaty Organisation leaders that Moscow controlled Berlin because of an energy pipeline project. Look at the millions of cars they sell in the US.

Where they're going to be paying Russian Federation billions and billions of dollars a year for energy, and I say that's not good, that's not fair. "But in a trade sense, they've really taken advantage of us and many of those countries are in North Atlantic Treaty Organisation". "I want to tell you".

"America and the European Union are best friends", Tusk wrote. "Because it's like, what, are they waving a white flag?"

Putin was due to arrive in Helsinki just ahead of the talks on Monday.
