Sharif loyalists arrested as former PM returns to appeal conviction

Maryam also said she is not serving the jail term because she has committed a crime but rather because she is the daughter of Nawaz Sharif.

According to jail manual, they can be medically examined at jail hospital.

It was also made a decision to keep Maryam in Adiala Jail's women's cell and not in Sihala rest house as suggested earlier.

Initially it was said that the duo will be shifted by a helicopter, but the idea was dropped due to darkness.

QUETTA, Pakistan - Disgraced former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was in custody on Saturday, a day after the deadliest attacks in Pakistan's troubled election campaign killed more than 130 people, including a candidate.

"Nawaz really believes this is about democracy and his legacy", Musadik Malik, Sharif ally and former PML-N cabinet minister, told Reuters. Security is being cited as the reason.

The Etihad Airways flight EY243 arrived in Lahore from Abu Dhabi. However, after some discussions with the Rangers they walked down to the terminal with Sharif holding a bag in his hand.

According to media reports, dozens of security officials entered the plane after it landed and asked other passengers to leave.

Reuters reported that clashes had broke out between pro-Sharif protesters and police who had been deployed in their thousands.

The trial against the Sharif family had commenced on September 14, 2017.

The men's singles semi-final between Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic will resume at 1pm tomorrow on Centre Court under the roof. They will also chat with ball girls and boys to learn more about what it's like to be an important part of the tournament.

Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz were handed down 10 and seven years' imprisonment, respectively, in the London properties case last week.

The bureau determined Sharif's family laundered money to pay for apartments in London.

Sahrif and Maryam were later sent on a special private plane bound for Islamabad International Airport. The daily claimed that the meeting took place in the jail superintendent's room which continued for more than two hours.

Pakistan People's Party, headed by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Pakistan Muslim League, led by Shezbaz Sharif are also a part of the elections. "No other province is facing the situation we see in Lahore: hundreds of our party workers have been arrested; people are being pressured into switching loyalties", Nawaz Sharif told Pakistan's Dawn news service over the phone while waiting for his connection. But they faced numerous obstacles as roads were barricaded with containers.

Malik said the PML-N rally was overwhelmingly peaceful and any ban on gatherings so close to the election was unfair.

Furthermore, the Punjab Police and the caretaker Punjab government issued detention and house arrest orders against several senior PML-N leaders as well.

PML-N candidates have also alleged Pakistan's intelligence agency, ISI, is pressuring them to switch loyalties and contest the July 25 polls as independents.

"The people of Lahore has given a verdict ahead of July 25 polls", he declared.

Earlier, in her special audio message for voters recorded before going to the Adiala jail, Maryam said: "You all know, I left my mother in critical condition, as I went to London to meet her along with my father Mohammad Nawaz Sharif".

Sharif's return comes at a time of dwindling fortunes for his party, which one year ago was considered a runaway favourite to retain power.
