Kavanaugh begins Senate charm offensive as Democrats roll out opposition strategy

GETTYBrexit news Boris Johnson resignation could spark delay in EU divorce negotiations

"I think Judge Kavanaugh has a record of being in favor of a strong executive".

That said, it is a decision that is entirely up to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, and the Iowa Republican made clear to CNN's Manu Raju on Tuesday that he needs time to get his arms around the scale of the documents and review process before he locks in a timeline. That could be the case, but for now, pressure has ramped up on Sens.

Manchin is one of five Senate Democrats trying to get reelected in November in a state Trump won by double digits. And we will come down on one side or the other but in due deference to the nominee and in due deference to the president's prerogative to name a nominee. The downside is that they'll be persona non grata in the party. Susan Collins of ME - said she needs more information before she knows whether Kavanaugh would uphold the Supreme Court's decision on Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 ruling affirming the legality of a woman's right to have an abortion under the 14th Amendment to the Constitution. Then again, in the nightmare scenario, the GOP could pick-up all of these seats. But the 42% who said that abortion should be legal in all or most cases overwhelmingly voted for Doug Jones - at 81%.

Kavanaugh said he has worked as a school tutor for struggling kids. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., the minority leader.

Durbin also sits on the judiciary committee.

"We have to lower the expectations of our base".

We'll see if Kavanaugh can secure the position, but women and the LGBTQ community are right to be anxious about having their rights stripped away.

"We're leaving no stone unturned and are searching for all publicly available information that can properly highlight the dangers of giving Kavanaugh a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court", Harrell Kirstein, the group's communications director, said in a statement.

"I think he's going to do well", he said.

Carmelo Anthony to Rockets? Juicy Summer League sighting blows race wide open
Teams don't want to tie up money into him with an offer sheet knowing that Houston will just match whatever offer is made. Worryingly, his presence on the court saw the Thunder's team plus/minus rating slide to negative 14.3 during the playoffs.

Derrick Johnson, president and CEO of the NAACP, told Al Jazeera that his organisation's immediate call of action would be to "have its members across the USA express their views to senators in their states and urge them to oppose this nomination".

According to CNN's exit polling taken after the 2017 special election, more than half of Alabama voters in that special election (52%) said abortion should be illegal in all or most cases.

After much hemming and hawing, the two Republican senators most apt to withhold their support, Maine's Susan Collins and Alaska's Lisa Murkowski, will ultimately back the nominee, saying they are comfortable with his record and temperament.

Despite Kavanaugh's qualifications, some Democrats have already expressed opposition.

"Healthcare, above all else, at the moment appears to be the key issue", Nan Aron, the president of liberal advocacy group Alliance for Justice, told the publication, noting a lawsuit filed in February against the health law challenging such provisions. Kavanaugh could be the needed fifth vote to overturn the 45-year precedents upholding a woman's right to an abortion.

Kavanaugh's view that a prosecution of a president should be diferred, is not one he always held. He is also the first of three Senate Democrats who voted for Trump's first Supreme Court pick, Justice Neil Gorsuch.

"Here is the tough decision those red state Democrats have to make", Schoen said in an opinion column for Fox News.

"We're honored to be able to bring him here ... and begin the important work that the Senate will do in discharging its constitutional duties to consider this good man as the president's nominee to the Supreme Court", Pence said as he, McConnell, and Kavanaugh posed for the cameras.
