Death Toll Hits 90 as Japan Battles With Historic Rain Aftermath

Japan flooding: Dozens dead as torrential rain triggers landslides

The rain may have stopped in Japan, but the country is facing a long recovery process after floods and landslides killed at least 90 people in the southwest.

Local media put the toll at 73, with dozens more people missing and the number of fatalities expected to rise.

Since Thursday parts of western Japan have received three times the usual rainfall for the whole of July, setting off floods and landslides.

More than 1.6 million people were ordered to evacuate their homes, while 3.1 million were put on high alert and urged to do so. Officials in Ehime prefecture asked the central government to review a weather warning system, noting that rain warnings were issued after damage and casualties were already reported, a possible cause of the region's extensive damage.

Rescuers restarted their search through the mud for any survivors or the bodies of those killed on Monday morning.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said 54,000 police officers, firefighters, and members of Japan's Self-Defense Forces and coast guard had been mobilized in the rescue effort, Kyodo reported.

"My husband couldn't make it home from work since the road was flooded, and since it was pouring down rain I didn't have enough courage to walk to an evacuation center with two infants after dark", one woman wrote on Twitter, without giving further details.

Another 61 were missing, NHK said, and more rain was set to hit some areas for at least another day. The company is based in Osaka and many of its stores are in western Japan.

The Nuevo Leon state prosecutor's office reported in a statement that 12 people died in six bar attacks overnight in the municipalities of Monterrey, Guadalupe and Juarez. But the Shinkansen bullet trains were still operating Sunday.

Temperature of up to 55.9 degrees Celsius was recorded in one city in Oita Prefecture, and Japan's Meteorological Agency (JMA) has warned those staying in or providing emergency relief in evacuation shelters to be wary of heatstroke.

Automakers including Mazda Motor Corp (7261.T) and Daihatsu Diesel Manufacturing Co (6023.T) suspended operations at several plants on Saturday due to a shortage of parts or risky conditions.

Most of the deaths occurred in the Hiroshima prefecture, where hundreds of homes were damaged.
