Trump ex-lawyer hints could flip against U.S. president

Trump's ex-lawyer Cohen to break his silence in interview on 'Good Morning America' on Monday

American Lawyer magazine said that Cohen's legal career is over. "I'm the guy who would take a bullet for the president", Cohen said. "He wouldn't have to do this complicated dance in the media".

Ch-ch-check out a report on Cohen's interview (below). "If Michael Cohen has damaging criminal information about POTUS/Manafort/Jared Kushner/Donald Jr., this would be a disaster for them".

Still, Mariotti and other legal observers were suspicious that such a close ally of the President would now so publicly hint that he might turn on him. Trump has denied wrongdoing and called the case a Democratic hit job. Cohen said that he couldn't comment on the advice of counsel, but noted that he has respect for those involved.

Cohen is protected by the Fifth Amendment from having to testify about anything at this point, Epner added, saying there are three possibilities for Cohen moving forward. "I would not do or say anything that might be perceived as interfering with their professional review of the evidence and the facts".

Mr Stephanopoulos said he asked Mr Cohen if he had any regrets about how he handled any of the matters under investigation.

Trump administration officials, including Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, have said Trump will raise the issue of election meddling with Putin, though Trump's own recent comment make it unclear if that will happen.

Cohen repeated this sentiment two more times and said he would not be a "punching bag" or allow anyone to paint him as a villain.

Cohen has not yet been charged with any crimes. But he also did nothing to dampen such speculation, taking issue with some of Trump's criticisms of the special counsel's Russian Federation investigation and even going out of his way to praise the FBI.

Cohen will therefore soon be charting out his own legal strategy, giving Trump no visibility into what his old fixer is planning for his defense against prosecutors.

In mid-June, as attorneys left his case, speculation heightened that Cohen was willing to cooperate with investigators.

Another source confirmed that Cohen and Petrillo had met to discuss taking Cohen on as a client.

Hendon, Petrillo and Cohen's team at McDermott did not respond to TPM's Monday requests for comment. "This Fifth Amendment protection would continue even if Michael Cohen were to be indicted by the SDNY or special counsel Mueller's team".

Trump said in April that "most people will flip" if the government lets them be out of trouble, but he didn't see Cohen doing that.

If Cohen reaches a deal with prosecutors, the consequences could be serious for Trump and his family on multiple fronts.

"I want to answer".

"Once I understand what charges might be filed against me, if any at all, I will defer to my new counsel, Guy Petrillo, for guidance", Cohen told ABC News.

He declined to answer if Trump himself knew about the meeting before it happened, referring to advice from his counsel concerning the federal investigation underway in NY.

Stephanopoulos said that in several instances, Cohen broke with Trump in characterizing the federal investigations.

It was Cohen's first comments to the media since his properties were raided by the Federal Bureau of Investigation on April 1.

Cohen, in the off-camera interview, also said he doesn't agree "with those who demonize or vilify the Federal Bureau of Investigation".
