Doubts raised over Merkel compromise on border controls

Will the divisions over migration split Germany conservative coalition and spell an end of the line for Chancellor Angela Merkel

Last week he threatened to turn back asylum seekers at Germany's borders unless Merkel reached an acceptable deal with other European Union countries, a move that has raised questions about the chancellor's political future.

Secretary General of the Christian Democratic Union Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, center, arrives to deliver a statement after a party leadership meeting at the CDU headquarters in Berlin, on July 1, 2018.

The future of the three-month old German government is in question as the interior minister has threatened to step down over Merkel's immigration deal.

Jens Spahn, an arch critic of Merkel's migrant policy, may be unpalatable to many in the CDU, especially after making some controversial comments on poverty and being photographed with the new, outspoken US ambassador, a defender of US President Donald Trump.

But soon after, Seehofer said he would hold last-ditch talks with Merkel's CDU "in hopes of reaching an understanding".

Speaking of the deal after terse negotiations on Monday, Mrs Merkel said: "We want on the one hand to set up transit centres in Germany and from there carry out returns in agreement with countries from which asylum seekers come and where they are already registered".

The strongest voice in opposition to mass migration in the Bundestag is the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, who have 94 seats to the governing coalition's 246.

Following marathon talks at the Brussels summer summit, European leaders eventually reached a compromise on migration in the early hours of Friday.

After a long day of maneuvering, Seehofer has offered to resign, according to party sources cited by the Reuters news agency.

Despite the drama over Mr. Seehofer's resignation threat on Sunday, several political analysts said the most likely outcome was for both parties to walk back and find a last-minute compromise.

This week, she has agreed to build border camps for asylum seekers and to tighten the border with Austria.

The border deal, hailed by the German chancellor as a "good compromise", foresees setting up so-called transit centres on the southern border, where asylum seekers who have already been registered in other European Union countries will be held until they can be sent back to those countries. The party leader, Andrea Nahles, said on Tuesday morning that she opposed the term "transit centres".

"The CSU's immigration policy and its treatment to its sister party are only supported by a minority", Forsa head Manfred Güllner told the RTL/n-tv broadcaster, which commissioned the survey. His ultimatum forced Ms. Merkel to seek a European Union mini-summit the previous weekend and diverted the scheduled European Union summit this past weekend to an all-night crisis meeting on the migration issue. Austrians, for instance, will not be willing to accommodate refugees and will therefore close their border with Italy and Slovenia quite soon, he explains.

Trump told the World Trade Organization on Monday that "we'll be doing something" if the United States is not treated properly, just hours after the European Union said that USA automotive tariffs would hurt its own vehicle industry and prompt retaliation.
