Capital Gazette Shooting: Prayer Service Held In Memory Of Victims

Maryland newspaper shooting suspect Jarrod Ramos denied bail after five people killed

A year after the story ran, Ramos filed an initial complaint against Capital Gazette Communications, Hartley and also Tom Marquardt, a former editor and publisher of the newspaper.

Ramos, who is facing five counts of first-degree murder, was denied bail at a hearing Friday.

Prosecutors said he barricaded a back door to stop people from fleeing.

But he confirmed that the man - who police say acted alone - was identified using facial recognition technology and other techniques.

The victims at the Capital Gazette are Gerald Fischman, 61, editorial page editor; Rob Hiaasen, 59, editor and features columnist; John McNamara, 56, sports reporter and editor; Wendi Winters, 65, reporter and community columnist; and Rebecca Smith, 34, a sales assistant.

"The malice dripped off this man in court", he said.

Hiaasen was the brother of best-selling author Carl Hiaasen.

The White House said President Donald J. Trump had been briefed.

"This attack shocked the conscience of our nation and filled our hearts with grief", he said before a speech to celebrate the tax overhaul law. "A violent attack on innocent journalists doing their job is an attack on every American".

A tight-knit town, honoring five lives - stolen Thursday afternoon at the Capital Gazette newspaper. "They're all good people just trying to support a local newspaper, and now everyone is wondering how could this have happened".

They put out a newspaper.

Annapolis Mayor Gavin Buckley said he was so proud of the journalists who had "soldiered on". "He loved journalism, he loved helping those young writers at the Gazette".

Sexton is next step in Cavaliers' new era of player development
Young could maybe sell tickets and generate a little buzz in a way no one else in Thursday's NBA Draft (7 p.m., ESPN ) could. Collin Sexton to the Cleveland Cavaliers? Sexton averaged 19.2 points and 3.6 assists as a freshman for the Crimson Tide.

These words from our national leader who has physically penned in journalists at his campaign rallies, mocked them as reporting "fake news" in front of thousands of jeering supporters, derided specific reporters in personal tweets and repeatedly described journalists as "enemies of the people".

More than 1,000 people streamed through Annapolis on Friday evening to remember the victims.

Maryland governor Larry Hogan said on Twitter he was "absolutely devastated" and was in contact with authorities.

Ramos went on to make "vague threats" against reporters and the paper, former editor Thomas Marquardt told MSNBC, so much so that staff members were told to call the 911 emergency number if Ramos ever entered the office.

Court records show a man charged with killing five people at a Maryland newspaper was sacked from a government IT contractor because of concerns about his "suitability".

Altomare said his department investigated threatening online comments that Ramos allegedly made against the paper in 2013.

The Capital Gazette made a decision to not press charges in 2013; they anxious it would exacerbate the conflict, Altomare said.

Brennan McCarthy, the lawyer who represented the woman Ramos harassed, says he knew how to "walk the line" when making a threat.

The Capital Gazette of June 29, 2018, is seen in a newspaper vending box in Annapolis, Maryland.

"I think fight or flight kicks in", Altomare said of the suspect. "I was bleeding and then obviously, you know, when I did try the door handle to get out, it was barricaded".

Authorities responded to the scene within a minute of the shooting, and Mr Ramos was arrested while also hiding under a desk with the shotgun on the floor nearby, police said.
