Jeff Sessions announces largest healthcare fraud takedown in USA history

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions addresses a news conference to announce a nation-wide health care fraud and opioid enforcement action at the Justice Department in Washington

This announcement appears to reflect both an ongoing commitment by the DOJ to prosecute health care fraud and opioid abuse cases, and that the emphasis by HHS on administratively excluding providers has become a part of the enforcement landscape over the past year.

On June 28, the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced another record-breaking annual nationwide health care fraud "takedown". These are despicable crimes.

Among dozens of new cases in South Florida, Greenberg zeroed in on Good Decisions Sober Living in West Palm Beach, whose operators recruited patients and paid kickbacks in order to bill $106 million for widespread fraudulent urine testing that was not medically necessary between 2011 and 2015, according to an indictment. The alleged fraud included kickback schemes for surgeries, compounded drugs, home health services, Medicare Part D prescription drugs and hospice care. The charges stem from Moorehead using the identities of multiple hospital patients with prescriptions for pain medications containing hydrocodone to dispense and divert the pills to his own personal use, and falsely indicating in Medicare beneficiaries' medical records that those medications were administered to the patients. We are just getting started.

Two other defendants are accused of operating three "false-front" medical clinics that resulted in $4.7 million in false medical billings submitted to three insurance companies and $258,000 paid in false billings, the prosecutor said. Separately, dozens of distributors and drug manufacturers are facing charges from cities, states, counties, and Native American tribes in a consolidated case in an OH federal court that could yield an unprecedented settlement.

The informations charge each of the defendants with one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, mail fraud and health care fraud.

Charges against Dr. Bingston Crosby, a chiropractor, include health care fraud, money laundering and mail fraud, authorities said.

Officials said health care fraud is not only about the monetary damages, which saw some of those charged receiving hundreds of thousands of dollars of fraudulent proceeds, but the crackdown is also about public safety. I want to thank our fabulous partners with the FBI, DEA, our Health Care Fraud task forces, HHS, the Defense Criminal Investigative Service, IRS Criminal Investigation, Medicare, and especially the more than 1,000 federal, state, local, and tribal law enforcement officers from across America who made this possible.

According to court documents, Global hired sales representatives who were located in various states and were responsible for generating prescriptions from physicians and other prescribers.

Some of the doctors were charged with prescribing and distributing opioids and other narcotics.

In the Los Angeles area, most of the defendants were charged for taking part in schemes to defraud Medicare and other health insurance programs.
