Trump Threatens To Hit Harley-Davidson With Taxes If It Moves Overseas

Harley-Davidson To Shift Production Overseas To Offset EU Tariffs

Harley-Davidson said Monday it was moving production of motorcycles sold in Europe from US factories to facilities overseas because of retaliatory tariffs it faces in an escalating trade dispute between involving Trump's administration and the European Union. Other companies are coming back where they belong!

"Early this year Harley-Davidson said they would move much of their plant operations in Kansas City to Thailand". Union officials have said those jobs are going to Thailand. Harley-Davidson spokesman Michael Pflughoeft declined to comment on the president's tweet.

Trump said this while defending his recent decision to impose tariffs on the import of foreign products. "Hence, they were just using Tariffs/Trade War as an excuse", he said.

"Trump added. ".A Harley-Davidson should never be built in another country-never! The company sold 39,773 motorcycles in Europe last year and if they didn't shift production, they would lose $45 (€38.6) million this year due to the increased tariffs.

"We need to be there and be relevant", Levatich said.

As US customers age and loyalty to the brand wanes, Harley-Davidson has been aiming to make up for falling US demand by boosting overseas sales to 50% of annual volume from about 43%.

"If they move, watch, it will be the beginning of the end - they surrendered, they quit!"

Ethiopia: Deadly Explosion Hits Ethiopia's PM Abiy Ahmed's Rally
The US embassy in Addis Ababa said: "Violence has no place as Ethiopia pursues meaningful political and economic reforms ". Police fired tear gas as they moved in to clear Meskel square where the rally was held, the AFP correspondent said.

"A Harley-Davidson should never be built in another country-never!" he said earlier on Twitter. "Harley must know that they won't be able to sell back into U.S.without paying a big tax!"

Besides Thailand, Harley-Davidson has two more assembly plants outside the USA, in Brazil and India.

Harley-Davidson executives met with Trump at the White House past year after Trump cancelled a visit to the company's headquarters in Milwaukee because protests had been planned.

Last week, India announced higher duties on several goods imported from the United States, in retaliation to Trump imposing hefty tariffs on steel and aluminium imports. "Harley must know that they won't be able to sell back into USA without paying a big tax!" Trump said on Twitter.

The rift is particularly notable because Harley-Davidson has traditionally, had strong support within the GOP.

The president has repeatedly attacked Amazon.com over what he sees as its unfair treatment of the US Postal Service.
