"There weren't really any verbal signs from Tyler to us or anybody at Washington State that he was suffering", Kym said.

"Was that the only thing that contributed to his death?"

In an interview for NBC's Today show, Mark Hilinski revealed what he was told about his son's brain: "The medical examiner said he had the brain of a 65-year-old, which is really hard to take". At one point, Mark asked Kym if she thought something was wrong with Tyler, and they determined he was just busy with classes and football and student life. Tyler's death was a shock to friends and family because they said he showed no visible signs of depression.

Tyler's parents also participated in a lengthy feature documentary with Greg Bishop of Sports Illustrated; the story is tough emotionally but absolutely worth your time. Two teammates went looking for him after he didn't show up to practice and found his body in his apartment. The Mayo Clinic approached the family about doing an autopsy on Tyler, a choice that couldn't have been easy for the parents. "We wanted to know everything we could, find out everything we could, so of course we immediately we said sure", he said of the Clinic's request.

"The same brain pathology that we observed in teenagers after head injury was also present in head-injured mice", says Lee Goldstein, a School of Medicine associate professor of psychiatry, in a news release about the study. "And it was shocking, because we know Tyler".

Tyler's younger brother is Ryan Hilinski, the No. 2 pro-style QB prospect in the nation for the 2019 recruiting cycle and current SC commit.
