Erdogan set to strengthen grip on power after Turkish election win

Turkey's Recep Tayyip Erdogan claims victory in dual elections as opposition urges caution on results

But the leading opposition party said it believes the results for the presidential elections are incomplete and may go to a second round.

He also declared victory for the People's Alliance, an electoral cooperation between his ruling Justice and Development Party and the small Nationalist Movement Party, saying they had a "parliamentary majority" in the 600-member assembly.

"We elected Recep Tayyip Erdogan as the first executive president of Turkey". Erdogan now faces into a further five years in power, while his AK party and its allies secured a parliamentary majority.

But the CHP expressed unease over the conduct of the count, accusing Anadolu of being overly hasty in publishing results that favoured Erdogan.

The pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party, or HDP, was edging past the 10 per cent threshold to enter parliament, with 10.7 per cent.

Turkey's High Electoral Board declared Erdogan, 64, the victor of Sunday's polls, which usher in a new executive presidential system that was approved in a referendum a year ago.

In the new era, the presidential office will have the power to appoint vice presidents, ministers, high-level officials and senior judges. "I hope nobody will damage democracy by casting a shadow on this election and its results to hide their failure".

The two parties are predicted to claim 293 and 49 seats in the 600-member parliament respectively, with nearly all of the ballot boxes opened, according to the Anadolu Agency.

German vehicle shares dip on Trump tariff tweet
In a retaliatory move, China responded with a 25% tariff on USA imports including Bourbon, which will come into play on 6 July. President Donald Trump , left, reportedly told French President Emmanuel Macron that he wants to rid the USA of German cars.

But in a situation labelled as blatant unfairness by activists, the HDP s presidential candidate Selahattin Demirtas has campaigned from a prison cell after his November 2016 arrest on charges of links to outlawed Kurdish militants.

A majority of 360 votes in parliament are required to take a constitutional change to referendum in the new executive presidential system. "That 10 percent apparently came from his ally, MHP", Mustafa Akyol, a Turkish columnist and analyst, told Al Jazeera.

On the call Putin and Erdogan confirmed their interest in "deepening partnership ties between the two countries", the Kremlin said, singling out priority projects such as the TurkStream gas pipeline and Turkey's first nuclear power plant being built by Moscow.

"This makes the MHP an important party for the AK Party and Erdogan", added Akyol.

Erdogan insisted the expanded powers of the Turkish presidency will bring prosperity and stability to the country, especially after a failed military coup attempt in 2016.

Erdogan blamed the coup on his former ally, USA -based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, and has waged a sweeping crackdown on the preacher's followers in Turkey.

Local and global rights groups accuse the government of using the coup bid as a pretext to silence opposition in the country.
