Xherdan Shaqiri and Granit Xhaka face two-match bans for goal celebrations

W.C: Xhaka, Shaqiri in hot water after controversial celebrations

FIFA's disciplinary panel had the power to impose two-match bans if the actions of the players in their 2-1 win last Friday were judged to have provoked the general public.

After falling behind in the fifth minute, Switzerland defied a cauldron-like atmosphere created by fervent Serbian supporters as they hit back with a thunderbolt from Xhaka and a last-minute breakaway goal from Shaqiri.

Fellow Gunners midfielder Granit Xhaka, along with Stoke winger Xherdan Shaqiri, were already facing a two match ban for their gestures against Serbia, plus a minimum £3,800 fine.

Both put their open hands together with their thumbs locked and fingers outstretched to make what looks like the double-headed eagle displayed on Albania's national flag, The Guardian have reported.

"It was not the only provocation by the Swiss players", Kokeza told BBC Sport.

Switzerland's Xherdan Shaqiri celebrates scoring their second goal during the World Cup group E match between Serbia and Switzerland in Kaliningrad Stadium in Kaliningrad, Russia, on June 22, 2018.

Strong Irish economy vulnerable to Brexit
Later, Mr Juncker received an honorary degree from the National University of Ireland. "This is a selfish interest". I am strongly against any temptation to try to isolate Ireland and not to conclude a deal on Ireland.

"You can see what I did, and it's just emotion, and I'm just happy to have scored the goal".

The players denied that their celebration was political.

"For me it was a really special day", said Xhaka, quoted by Reuters. The countries now called Kosovo and Serbia have been in conflict for centuries, but tensions were especially high in the late 1980s under Yugoslavia president Slobodan Milosevic. The gesture was for everyone who has supported me, it was not aimed at our opponents.

Serbia refuses to recognize the independence of its former province Kosovo, whose 1.8 million people are mostly ethnic Albanians, which broke away 10 years ago, and opposed Kosovo's ultimately successful bid to join Federation Internationale de Football Association.

Swiss coach Vladimir Petkovic after the match reproached the players, saying that soccer and politics should "never mix".

The Serbian football association reportedly complained to FIFA before the game about the Kosovo flag on one of Shaqiri's boots. Both their families sought sanctuary in Switzerland during the Yugoslav Wars of Independence, when many ethnic Albanians were persecuted, imprisoned and killed.
