Ethiopia: Deadly Explosion Hits Ethiopia's PM Abiy Ahmed's Rally

Ethiopian Satellite Television is among the broadcasters allowed back on air

An explosion has rocked a rally in support of Ethiopia's new prime minister, leaving a few dead and injured. Ahmed said a number of people were killed, though this was later contradicted by a government spokesman, who said 83 people were injured, six critically, but no deaths had occurred.

He later confirmed people had been injured in the blast.

The rally's organizer, Seyoum Teshome, told The New York Times he believes the prime minister was the attack's target, "because the suspect was aiming to throw the grenade by the right side of the stage, where he was sitting".

In an address broadcast afterwards on state television, Abiy said the incident was orchestrated by groups who wanted to undermine the rally, but he did not name them.

In recent years, Ethiopia has been riven by protests by members of the country's two largest ethnic groups - the Oromo and the Amhara.

The US embassy in Addis Ababa said: "Violence has no place as Ethiopia pursues meaningful political and economic reforms".

Police fired tear gas as they moved in to clear Meskel square where the rally was held, the AFP correspondent said.

To make it feel like a little less pressure against France in the last game. Jumping for joy: Jedinak now has three World Cup goals. Denmark , meanwhile, won its first match against Peru.

The attack was 'cheap and unacceptable, ' the prime minister added, saying: 'Love always wins. Killing others is a defeat.

While Ethiopia is one of Africa's fastest-growing economies, tiny Eritrea is one of the world's most closed-off nations, ruled by Afwerki since gaining independence from Ethiopia in 1993 after years of rebel warfare. "To those who tried to divide us, I want to tell you that you have not succeeded".

Mr Abiy only became prime minister after his predecessor Hailemariam Desalegn unexpectedly resigned in February.

Saturday's rally began as a show of exuberance, with supporters wearing clothes displaying Mr Abiy's image and carrying signs saying "One Love, One Ethiopia".

Eritrean Ambassador to Japan Estifanos Afeworki said on Twitter that his country strongly condemns the attack.

The movement said its goal was "the realization of a national political system in which government power and political authority is assumed through peaceful and democratic process based on the free will and choice of citizens of the country".

Ethiopia has been riven by years of sometimes violent protests.
