Switzerland's come-from-behind win leaves Serbia facing tall order

A thunderous strike by Granit Xhaka and a superb last-minute breakaway goal by Xherdan Shaqiri gave Switzerland a dramatic 2-1 win over Serbia in a swashbuckling World Cup Group E match on Friday.

Both Xhaka and Shaqiri celebrated their goals by referencing Albania's symbolic double-headed eagle with their hands.

"We know everything about Switzerland", stated their head coach Mladen Krstajic after their first match, which was also his first competitive game in charge of the side.

Shaqiri also played in boots marked with the flags of Switzerland and Kosovo - the breakaway region that is not recognized as independent by Serbia or Russian Federation.

Cavs want to keep Kevin Love with or without LeBron James
James is continuing to play at the highest level at 33 years of age and seems to be breaking or passing records with each game. If they can retain James and make a couple other moves to better their squad, they could be even more unsafe next season.

Xhaka was born to Kosovan-Albanian parents and his father Ragip spent three-and-a-half years in prison for demonstrating against the Communist Yogoslavia rule in Kosovo.

And Shaqiri would secure the points on the stroke of 90 minutes when he broke behind the defence and rolled his shot past a charging Stojkovic to make Switzerland the first team to score a come-from-behind victory in Russian Federation. (Getty Images) Shaqiri had the Kosovo flag on his right boot against Serbia. Relations between Serbia and Kosovo have remained fraught, as Serbia refuses to recognize its former province as an independent nation.

During the game Shaqiri wore athletic shoes that depicted the Kosovo flag of Kosovo on the back of one heel and the Swiss flag on the other.

But FIFA rules clearly state that players will be punished for any political statements they make during their celebrations.
