Dozens missing after ferry sinks in Indonesia's Lake Toba

A woman cries as she finds out her family is one of missing passengers at Lake Toba ferry port in the province of North Sumatra after a boat overturned

An estimated 18 people were rescued and one passenger was confirmed dead after the ferry sank on Monday evening when it was overcome by rough weather.

Authorities were still trying to confirm the total number of passengers, but said at least 128 people were missing, including many children.

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency said there were unconfirmed reports of up to 130 people on board the ferry, which was hit by high waves and strong winds.

Indonesian rescuers are searching for more than 100 people missing after a ferry sank on a lake in Sumatra.

Two other ferries and a wooden boat were involved in the rescue effort.

"It might take time to find victims who drowned", he added.

"Whether they were all passengers on the boat or not, we don't know", transport ministry official Sri Hardianto told AFP.

Kapal Motor Sinar Bangun boat carrying about around 80 people, majority domestic visitors, capsized at 17:30 p.m. Jakarta time after leaving Simanindo port in Samosir district, spokesman of the national disaster management agency Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said.

Lake Toba, a popular tourist destination, fills the caldera of a giant dormant volcano and is one of the deepest lakes in the world.

Pictures from the scene show distressed relatives of missing passengers holding each other and crying as they wait for news at Tigaras Port. "I'm afraid my family is dead", Juwita Sumbayak, a survivor said, The Age reported.

The Search and Rescue Agency based in the city of Medan, in the north of the island of Sumatra, declared that 18 survivors were rescued and presumably a breakage of the rudder of the boat was the cause for the accident that occurred the day before.

Ferry tragedies are common in Indonesia, an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands, with weak enforcement of safety regulations often to blame.

Earlier this month, a ferry carrying around 43 people sank off Makassar on Sulawesi Island, killing 13.
