Taliban bans fighters from visiting government-held areas

The June 17 bombing in the city of Jalalabad came as Afghans celebrated a three-day cease-fire marking the Eid al-Fitr holiday that ends the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

A USA official said Washington believes that it is likely the strike killed Fazlullah, but efforts are ongoing to confirm his death.

Earlier, Afghanistan's President Ashraf Ghani announced the extension of the truce without specifying an end date and called on the Taliban to do the same.

Ghani made his announcement in a rare televised address to the nation, in which he also asked the Taliban to extend their three-day ceasefire which is due to end Sunday.

A auto bomb killed 36 people at a gathering of Taliban and Afghan armed forces in the same province on Saturday.

No one claimed responsibility for the attack and Ullah said police transported the bodies to a nearby hospital.

The Taliban announced their truce for the first three days of Eid, which started Friday, promising not to attack Afghan security forces for the first time in the almost 17-year conflict.

An Afghan defense ministry official says Friday, June 15, 2018 a United States drone strike in northeastern Kunar province killed Pakistan Taliban chief Mullah Fazlullah.

The Taliban's statement added that their cease-fire was for their fighters to celebrate the holiday peacefully and not in response to the government's cease-fire announcement.

The first formal, nationwide ceasefire since the 2001 United States invasion had been met with jubilation across the country as Afghans - Taliban, security forces and civilians - celebrated Eid, the holiday that caps the fasting month of Ramadan.

The Afghan government is also carrying out a ceasefire which will last until Wednesday.

MPs opposing the opening of relations said Mr Ghani had not consulted politicians and would be left with no recourse if the Taliban rejected his impromptu request to reciprocate extending the ceasefire, as they now have.

Nangarhar Province is the main base of IS militants in Afghanistan.

Taliban fighters and Afghan security forces hugged in astonishing scenes during an unprecedented ceasefire in the war-torn country.

He said a bomber on foot blew himself up among a crowd of Taliban fighters, local elders and civilians leaving the governor's compound after attending a special event for Eid.

"(That's) no bad thing if they are able to see the benefits of talking not fighting", he said.

It's not surprising that ISIS claimed responsibility for Saturday's attack that killed Taliban members. He urged the Taliban to do the same.

"We will soon share the details of the proposed ceasefire with the nation", Afghan President Ashraf Ghani tweeted.

The only time direct talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban have been held, in 2015, they broke down nearly immediately.

There were also festival-like scenes of rival fighters parading down city streets in Logar, holding Afghan and Taliban flags.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, echoing Ghani's remarks, said peace talks would have to include a discussion on the role of "international actors and forces".

The Afghan government called for an extension to the ceasefire as it released Taliban prisoners on Saturday.

Resolute Support said it was hopeful that the Taliban stick to their ceasefire "and we hope that pause leads to dialogue and progress on reconciliation".
