Donald Trump, nervous Republicans scramble for legislative fix to family separation crisis

Melania Trump enters debate over separation of migrant families

Around 2,000 minors have been separated from their families in the past six weeks, since Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced a zero tolerance policy where everyone caught crossing the border illegally will be prosecuted. It does not call for family separation.

President Trump met with House Republicans to discuss immigration policy this afternoon in an atmosphere that was approaching a real political crisis.

Ms Conway rejected the idea that the president was using the kids as leverage to force Democrats to negotiate on immigration and his long-promised border wall, even after Mr Trump tweeted on Saturday: "Democrats can fix their forced family breakup at the Border by working with Republicans on new legislation, for a change!"

Trump, who has made a tough stance on immigration a centerpiece of his presidency, has steadfastly defended his administration's actions.

However, amid reports of a "Republican huddle" on the issue, Donald Trump remained defiant, and repeated his claim that the "Democrats are the problem" for blocking his reforms to immigration legislation in a series of tweets.

The bill also ends the visa lottery and limits the types of family members that can be sponsored for immigration - then takes those visas and uses them on the DACA population and other children brought to the U.S.by their parents.

The draft bill was seen just days ago as unlikely to pass, but has gained support in the House.

The Republican president blamed Democrats for not coming to the table to negotiate immigration legislation.

Two of the top U.S. business groups, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Business Roundtable, decried the separation policy on Tuesday and called for its immediate cessation.

Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, a member of the Freedom Caucus, said he's skeptical that even a full-throated endorsement from Trump will be enough to get the compromise bill through the House.

An audio recording that appears to capture the heartbreaking voices of small children crying out for their parents at a U.S. immigration facility is fuelling fury over the Trump administration's policy of separating immigrant children from their parents.

It was a sign of things to come, as the youthful Senegalese legs began to take up the ascendancy over a stale Poland outfit. Senegal started the stronger team with Aliou Cisse's men keen to break down the wings at any given opportunity.

Since children can not be sent to the facilities where their parents are held, they are separated from them. "We can not and will not encourage people to bring children by giving them blanket immunity from our laws", he said.

Despite what Trump, Brooks, and Sessions say about Democrats, liberals believe in having a secure border.

Tuesday's huddle between Trump and Republican lawmakers will be closely watched, in part to see whether any of them dare to directly confront the president.

Another group of lawmakers on Monday visited an old warehouse in McAllen, Texas, where hundreds of children are being held in cages created by metal fencing.

"In the face of this ongoing human tragedy, let me be very clear: NY will not be party to this inhumane treatment of immigrant families", Governor Cuomo said in a statement.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell echoed the new urgency.

"To those who wish to challenge the Trump Administration's commitment to public safety, national security, and the rule of law, I warn you: illegally entering this country will not be rewarded, but will instead be met with the full prosecutorial powers of the Department of Justice", he said.

Well, the change is, is because we're actually enforcing the law.

Earlier Tuesday some of the president's key supporters warned him against embracing the bill.

At a White House briefing Monday, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen declared, "Congress alone can fix it".

Decrying "internment camps", Democrats and their supporters disrupted a high-profile US congressional hearing about an Federal Bureau of Investigation probe on Tuesday.
