Meghan's father Thomas Markle breaks silence after missing wedding

Meghan Markle Prince Harry wedding

The visible absence of Meghan Markle's father Thomas from the much-hyped royal wedding caught the attention of many.

The resulting furore - and his subsequent decision to pull out of giving his daughter away days before her wedding last month - prompted an unprecedented public statement by Meghan, 36.

When he told the young couple that he could not attend the wedding, Markle said Harry and Meghan were sad but supportive: "They both said, "Take care of yourself, we are really anxious about you".

"I was complaining I didn't like Donald Trump", 73-year-old Markle said.

He added: "I cried a little watching her... And that was because I didn't take care of the heart problems before, so I had another friend take me back across the border to a hospital in the States where I was told my condition was very bad and I had to operate and so I had heart surgery".

Meghan's dad said the whole affair left him in tears - describing himself as a "footnote in one of the greatest moments in history". "So that upsets me somewhat".

Thomas goes on to share more information about his daughter during the interview, including her plans to have children as well as what he now calls her after she received a royal title.

Seemingly unfazed by his daughter marrying into the royal family, Mr Markle said she had "been a princess since the day she was born", adding: "He made a good pick, didn't he?"

He said that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, as the couple are now known, would likely try to have children soon.
