Sri Lanka skipper Dinesh Chandimal charged with ball-tampering by ICC

Devon Smith and Kraigg Brathwaite put on a 59-run stand for the opening wicket

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has now made a decision to charge Chandimal for breaching Level 2.2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct.

The charge constitutes a breach under Article 2.2.9 of the ICC's code of conduct, which deals with altering the condition of the ball by "unfair" means.

Sri Lanka held up play for almost two hours having been penalised five penalty runs ahead of the third day of the second Test against the West Indies due to a ball-tampering row.

According to ESPNCricinfo, the umpires laid the charge after reviewing footage of the second day's play, and finding evidence pointing to the application of a substance to the ball.

It is understood that what raised tempers in the Sri Lanka camp was that the match officials had informed Chandimal that they were going to change the ball about 10 minutes before the start of play on day three. The match referee Javagal Srinath was also seen having an animated discussion with the Sri Lankan team officials.

After initially appearing to be prepared to resume the match, the Sri Lankan cricketers then hesitated even as they were making their way out to the middle.

Meghan Markle and Queen Elizabeth make their first appearance as a twosome!
The venue describes itself as "a library, theatre and cinema" and attracted one million customers in its first year. There were a lot of possible destinations as to where the Duke and Duchess of Sussex would spend their honeymoon.

The officials laid the charge after television footage from the final session's play on Friday appeared to show the Sri Lanka captain taking candies out from his left pocket and putting these in his mouth, before applying the artificial substance to the ball which the umpires viewed as an attempt to change its condition. The umpires suspected that the visitors' skipper Dinesh Chandimal changed the condition of the ball and chose to change it which didn't go down well with the team.

They remained just beyond the boundary in discussions with team management, while match officials also huddled in conference.

Sri Lanka Cricket advised the team to play "under protest" and that team management said no players "engaged in any wrongdoing" - while it would take all steps to defend any player charged with "any unwarranted allegation".

Bancroft was subsequently whacked with a nine-month ban from global and first-class cricket by Cricket Australia.

The latest incident was akin to the 2006 one where Pakistan chose not to return after tea on day four against England at The Oval, after umpire Darrell Hair changed the ball and awarded five penalty runs.

It was the wicketkeeper-batsman's 78-run fifth-wicket partnership with Roston Chase (41) which threatened to earn the West Indies a significant first innings advantage.
