White House says Trump backs immigration effort

Trump holds chaotic news conference on White House lawn

President Donald Trump on Friday said that he would not sign an immigration bill that House Republicans drafted as a compromise between the conservative and more centrist wings of their caucus. There is a law against "improper entry" at the border, as well as a consent decree known as the Flores settlement that limits to 20 days the amount of time migrant children may be held in immigration detention, which a federal judge ruled in 2016 also applies to families.

"What the bill does do - layered on top of the continuing prosecutions and separations - is allow families in need of protection to be deported much more quickly (though still after separation by prosecution) without due process", Jawetz told ThinkProgress by email.

Some Republicans who support the president said Trump knew exactly what he was doing as lawmakers tried to cobble a simple majority for a vote sometime next week.

President Trump speaks to reporters at the White House on Friday.

The White House told lawmakers Friday that Trump would sign the bill if it passes.

The Trump administration's policy of separating migrant children from their families was first weighed when John Kelly served as the homeland security secretary in March 2017, and proposed the move in order to deter migrants from attempting to illegally cross the border.

"We can't have children with parents who are in incarceration, so they are given to me", Azar said.

With horror stories of babies and young children being taken from their mothers receiving heavy news coverage, the White House sought to shift the narrative by providing some media groups with a tour of a former Wal-Mart near the border in Texas that houses several hundred immigrant children. Trump said in a morning post on Twitter.

Trudeau's criticism will cost Canada 'a lot of money'
Asked if he was apologising for the comments, Navarro said: "Yeah, absolutely". She also said the European Union would "act" against the USA trade measures.

Democrats are expected to solidly oppose both Republican bills.

"The "zero tolerance" prosecution policy driving the separation of families isn't addressed in the White House 2.0 bill, so it can't even begin to claim that it will halt family separation", said Tom Jawetz, the vice president for immigration policy at the Center for American Progress. And I don't see any prospect for legislation here. "If you're a Republican and you're facing a challenging political environment and the president who is very popular in your district, not mine, says that he's against this bill, why in the world would you vote in favor of it?"

"The policy now being enacted where children are being separated from their parents even when they're applying for asylum, we want that to stop", said Acosta. Miller said the strict policy provided a "perverse incentive" for migrants that would ensure that if they got to the border and claimed a "credible fear" of returning home, they would at least be given a chance to stay under asylum laws temporarily.

The "forced family breakup" policy Trump was referring to is one enforced by his own administration, specifically the zero-tolerance policy Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced in May.

The confusion engulfed the House chamber during the last vote series of the week and was emblematic of an exercise that members have managed before during tax revisions and health care where Trump famously held a celebration of an Obamacare repeal bill in the White House Rose Garden only to turn around and call the bill "mean" later. The folks might forget what the president said, but they'll remember how you voted.

Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar told lawmakers last week that children are only separated when adults attempt to enter the US without following proper protocols.

"The side effect of zero tolerance is that fewer people will come up illegally, and fewer minors would be put in danger", said a third senior administration official.

"He keeps us all excited about how we are going to get things done", Rep. Dennis Ross, a Republican from Florida and supporter of the compromise bill, told CNN.
