Trump credits his tweet in Rep. Sanford's defeat

2018 Election: What to expect in Nevada, Virginia, Maine, North Dakota and South Carolina - Philly

Sanford's voting record is generally conservative, but his criticism of Trump as unworthy and culturally intolerant made him a target of dedicated Trump supporters who often elevate loyalty over policy.

While none of South Carolina's House seats are expected to be competitive in November, incumbent Rep. Mark Sanford is facing a hard Republican primary on Tuesday against state Rep. Katie Arrington. One of her ads said "it's time for Mark Sanford to take a hike - for real this time". In fact, we're told Trump didn't decide to launch his "Mark Sanford is better off in Argentina" tweet until exit polling had confirmed that an Arrington upset was in the works.

That was a reference to Sanford's surprise disappearance from the state as governor, which he later revealed was to further his affair with an Argentine woman. Afterwards, in 2013, he somehow won a special election for the first district seat, filling the vacancy left when Tim Scott was appointed to the Senate.

Sanford is in his second stint representing the 1st District, which includes the Lowcountry and the city of Charleston.

Since then, Sanford has accused Trump of fanning "the flames of intolerance", criticized Trump's use of the word "shit-hole" to describe some third world countries, and most recently called the president's plan to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports "an experiment with stupidity". In 2016, Sanford endorsed Trump as the party's nominee, but in an op-ed for The New York Times, called upon him to release his taxes.

Sanford, a member of the hard right House Freedom Caucus, has always been one of the few congressional Republicans willing to openly break with Trump. "No matter what damage you inflict on our economy, our alliances, trade, our stature in the world, our role as an exemplar of democratic values, our ability to serve as an honest broker in the global community, and our security, Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell will lay supine before you".

'Don't expect too much': Rodman plays down Kim-Trump breakthrough
Authorities have beefed up security around the hotels where Trump and Kim (Saint Regis) will be staying in central Singapore . The US says its discussions with North Korea are moving "more quickly than expected" ahead of the summit in Singapore .

Rep. Martha Roby, for example, was forced into a runoff last week in Alabama after her opponents seized on her own rift with the president. Others have told us Trump's tweet was indispensable, driving additional turnout during the final critical afternoon rush.

Rosen is vacating her seat in the Third Congressional District, and it's widely expected that philanthropist Susie Lee will easily land the Democratic nomination for that district.

He also slammed Sanford as being 'better off in Argentina'. Marco Rubio (R-FL) was pressed during an interview to explain a tweet he posted on Tuesday calling totalitarian dictator Kim Jong Un "a total weirdo who would not be elected assistant dog catcher in any democracy". Even in MA, where the Republican Party represents a mere 10 percent of all registered voters, Republican Governor Charlie Baker walks a line when it comes to Trump. In his remarks Tuesday night, he said: "I stand by every one of those decisions to disagree with the president". A month later, Trump and his 2020 campaign manager Brad Parscale pushed Danny Tarkanian out of the GOP primary against Heller, eliminating a serious threat to the nation's most vulnerable Republican incumbent. The polls close at 7:00 p.m. ET. In North Dakota, GOP Representative Kevin Cramer was declared the party's primary victor, setting him up to run against Democratic Senator Heidi Heitkamp.

He demurred during the run-up to the 2016 election when asked if he'd support Trump and spoke out against the president after the election on issues such as limiting Muslim immigrants. He can win. Even Fake News CNN said the Trump impact was really big, much bigger than they ever thought possible. Also, why did it take so long for Trump to get into the game?

Sanford is a second U.S. House member from the South attacked by a challenger for criticizing Trump.
